CLASS VISITS

WELCOME

  • Welcome “Good morning (school name), my name is ______.”
  • By show of hands “Who has been here before?”

STORY #1: Choose a favorite age appropriate story.

LIBRARY MATERIALS

  • Story #1 is an example of a book you can take out from the library, other examples:

J FIC, NF, biography, readers, knock knock (read a few), pop-up books

LIBRARY CARD

  • “What do you need to take home all these things?” – LIBRARY CARD (Show)
  • “Who already has a library card?”

BORROW BOOKS

  • “Do you pay for books at the library?”
  • “Can you keep books forever?”
  • Books can be taken out for ____ weeks.

FINES

  • “What happens if you don’t bring back a library book in time?”
  • Pay a fine of ____ cents a day
  • “What happens if you lose or break a book you borrowed?”
  • Pay for the whole book!

CONDITION OF BOOKS

  • “Where do you keep your library books?”
  • Give examples of places to keep books at home and have students tell you yes or no.
  • Under the bed? On a desk? In the refrigerator?
  • Show damaged books. “This is what happens when you don’t take care of your books, if you don’t take good care of them you might have to pay for them.”

RULES IN THE LIBRARY

  • Behavior in the library – “can you eat a Happy Meal in library?” “Can you run in the library?” “Can you use a computer in the library?”
  • Running, screaming, fighting
  • Be with parent at computer
  • If you have a question, ask the librarian.

TOUR

  • If you take a book from the shelf, put it on table or on the end of a shelf.
  • Pick a random book off the shelf and demonstrate what not to do. Have the students tell you what to do with it.

STORY #2 (if time): Make it an interactive story (ex: Look Once Look Twice by Janet Marshall, a pop-up book from the storytime collection, etc)

Hand out Library pencils/information to bring home and say goodbye!
