Thanksgiving for Baptism [adapted from Evangelical Lutheran Worship]

A Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, the fountain of living water, who gave us birth, our light and our salvation.

C Amen.

A Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God’s mercy and forgiveness.

C Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism.

A We give you thanks, O God,

C for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight

A We praise you for the gift of water that sustains life, and above all we praise you for the gift of new life in Jesus Christ. Shower us with your Spirit, and renew our lives with your forgiveness, grace, and love.

C To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen!

Opening Hymn # 314 Arise, Your Light Has Come

Litany for the Second Sunday after the Epiphany

P You speak to us in many ways, O Lord.

C Help us to listen to you always.

P Almighty God, give us the ears of Samuel,

C “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening,”

P Give us the eagerness of Philip,

C “We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote,”

P Give us the willing faith of Nathanael,

C “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”

P In all the ways in which messages are conveyed to us,

C may your words be heard both loud and clear.

P Let us pray. Almighty God, give us the ears of Samuel,

C "Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening,"

P who heard your midnight whispers and opened himself to your message. Give us the eagerness of Philip,

C "We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote,"

P who shared with his friend the happy news of your Son. Give us the willing faith of Nathanael,

P who saw the wondrous works of Christ and believed. Through the same Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. He lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

1st Reading 1 Samuel 3:1-10

At a time when visions are rare and unexpected, the Lord comes to Samuel and calls him to speak the divine word. Though just a boy, Samuel responds to God obediently, as Eli the priest has taught him to respond. This marks the beginning of Samuel’s prophetic ministry.

A A reading from the third chapter of First Samuel.

Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord under Eli. The word of the Lord was rare in those days; visions were not widespread. At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his room; the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was. Then the Lord called, "Samuel! Samuel!" and he said,

C "Here I am!"

A and ran to Eli, and said,

C "Here I am, for you called me."

A Eli answered, "I did not call; lie down again." So he went and lay down. The Lord called again, "Samuel!" Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said,

C "Here I am, for you called me."

A Again Eli answered, "I did not call, my son; lie down again." Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. The Lord called Samuel again, a third time. And he got up and went to Eli, and said,

C "Here I am, for you called me."

A Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, "Go, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall say, 'Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.'" So Samuel went and lay down in his place. Now the Lord came and stood there, calling as before, "Samuel! Samuel!"

C "Speak, for your servant is listening."

A Here ends the first reading.

2nd Reading 1 Corinthians 6:12-20

Paul is helping the Corinthians understand that God has claimed the entirety of their lives through the death of Christ. Hence Christian relationships and conduct, including areas of human sexuality, are to reflect the reality that we belong to Christ and that the Holy Spirit lives within us.

Gospel Acclamation page 216, Allelua. Lord toWhom Shall We Go?

Gospel John 1:43-51

In John’s gospel, Jesus’ ministry begins with the call of disciples, who then bring others to Jesus. Philip’s friend Nathanael moves from skepticism to faith when he accepts the invitation to “Come and see.”

Prayers for Christian Unity Week

P Let us pray for our local Christian communities, our churches and ecumenical groups; for those here present, and those who are absent from our assembly today. Lord, forgive us when we are indifferent to each other, and bring your healing to the wounds and divisions that keep us apart.

C Lord, hear our prayer.

P Let us pray for a deeper appreciation of our common baptism into the one body of Christ. Lord, sustain each of us and our communities as we continue on the path towards the unity you desire for all your disciples.

C Lord, hear our prayer.

P Let us pray for our spiritual leaders and church authorities that the Spirit may continue to enlighten them and grant them the grace to work in harmony, joy and love.

C Lord, hear our prayer.

P Let us pray for all civil authorities. Lord, grant that they may work towards justice and peace, and give them the wisdom to attend to the needs of all, especially the most vulnerable.

C Lord, hear our prayer.

P Let us pray in thanksgiving for those who, inspired by you, Lord, have held an important place in our lives of faith, and for all who have reflected your forgiveness, compassion and love of neighbor. May their gifts and generosity inspire our own desire to give and to serve with our lives.

C Lord, hear our prayer.

P Let us pray for all Christian churches and ask for your help, Lord, so that one day they may be able to gather around the table and share the fellowship of Holy Communion.

C Lord, hear our prayer.

Prayers of Intercession

P Filled with the power of the Holy Spirit through baptism, let us come before the throne of God to offer prayers for the needs of the church and world.

P …Let us pray to the Lord.

C Lord, hear our prayer.

P Into your hands, we lay our prayers, trusting in your mercy through the one who showed us your face, Jesus Christ, our Lord

C Amen.

A Litany: Proverbs of Peace for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

P As the Book of Proverbs says, "To do what is right and just is more acceptable to the Lordthan sacrifice."

C Help us, O Lord, to do what is right and just by treating others the way that we would want to be treated.

P As the Book of Proverbs says, "Do not plot harm against your neighbor, who lives trustfully near you. Do not accuse a human for no reason--when he or she has done you no harm."

C Help us, O Lord, to respect the people around us and show your love to everyone.

P As the Book of Proverbs says, "There is deceit in the hearts of those who plot evil, but joyfor those who promote peace."

C Help us, O Lord, to be promoters of peace in our neighborhoods and communities.

P As the Book of Proverbs says,“The person who loves a quarrel loves sin; the person who builds a high gateinvites destruction."

C Help us, O Lord, to work to bring unity to all instead of division.

P As the Book of Proverbs says, "Do not forsake your friend and the friend of your father.

C Help us, O Lord, to never forsake anyone because of race, creed, or color, just as you have never forsaken us.
