President’s Remarks

Council of Presidents Briefing

President Wallerstein briefed members of Cabinet on the September 8th CUNY Council of Presidents meeting. He noted Chancellor Goldstein is planning to visit all 23 college and university school campuses within the next several months. Each campus will be requested to assemble faculty, staff and students to meet with the Chancellor.

President Wallerstein reported CUNY Senior University Dean Robert Ptachik highlighted the change in the minimum number of credits required for TAP eligibility. A brief discussion followed. Vice President Corpus noted Baruch College would be minimally impacted by the change as a majority of Baruch College students take the maximum number of credits allowed. Those students who will be affected have been notified of the change.

President Wallerstein reported he will soon put together a group to begin discussing strategic budget cuts for FY12.

Provost Matters

Mid Tenure Review

Provost McCarthy reviewed a CUNY Board of Trustee resolution which gives a formal role to school deans in the tenure process and provides tenure track faculty with adequate guidance early in the tenure process. A discussion followed.

Results of Budget Meetings

Vice President Eszterhas briefed members of Cabinet on the results of the divisional budget meetings and noted minutes of all meetings were sent to each respective divisional head.

Members of Cabinet discussed the need to reduce temporary services funding and approved a plan as presented by Vice President Eszterhas.

Members of Cabinet discussed the need to repurpose funds to invest in new and important initiatives that will advance the College. Dr. Martell stressed the need to do budget prioritization before hitting long term funding sources. Members of Cabinet agreed it is important that the College remain competitive and maintain the “Top 25” quality it has achieved, as well as position the College so that it is ready to move forward once the budget downturn is over.

Spring Headcount and FY11 Revenue Projections

Vice President Eszterhas distributed documents that outline spring headcount and FY11 revenue projections with various scenarios. A discussion followed. Members of Cabinet agreed on scenario two which will allow the College to meet its revenue target as commissioned by CUNY Central. Members of Cabinet agreed if the right courses are offered and filled to capacity an optimistic revenue outlook is possible.

Residence Hall: Marginal Cost of Additional Units and Full Cost Allocation to Current Rent

Vice President Eszterhas distributed a document outlining the cost of additional residential units and the full cost allocation to current rent. A discussion followed. Vice President Corpus stressed the ability to continue to offer residence space is key in recruiting competitively. Vice President Eszterhas reported the College has opened negotiations in pursuing additional floors in 101 Ludlow. Members of Cabinet agreed the matter would need to be put forward to the Auxiliary Enterprises Corporation Board.

Policy on the Outside Use of Conference Space and BPAC by External Entities

Members of Cabinet discussed the need to review external requests for use of Baruch College space in order to assess the potential for controversy and to ensure the College is not directly associated with implicitly supporting the agenda of the renter. Ms. Latouf noted there is a policy in place. Dean Peck noted the special Cabinet sub-committee commissioned with the evaluation of the use of conference space should further discuss the policy.

Members of Cabinet agreed the policy should indicate that when any external entity utilizes Baruch College space, it should not be publicized as a Baruch College event and further, no member of the Baruch College community should publicize the event.

CUNY Sponsored Construction News Supplement

Ms. Latouf reported CUNY will be producing a glossy supplement on ongoing CUNY construction projects. Baruch College will be submitting a spread on the Vertical Campus: Creating Innovating Spaces for the Next Generation and the Renovation of the Field Building.

Vice President Corpus reported The Wall Street Journal recently published a story on companies that hire graduates from public institutes and neither SUNY nor CUNY were included. Members of Cabinet noted it would be any interesting article to share with BCF Trustees
