Friday Workshop Proposal

Title: First International QEMU Users’ Forum

Organizers:
Wolfgang Mueller (University of Paderborn, Germany),
Frederic Petrot (TIMA, Grenoble, France)

Description and Focus:

QEMU is a fast open source software emulator, which provides an instruction and register accurate abstraction of a real target CPU including its memory management unit, which supports of multiple platforms, e.g., x86, ARM and PowerPC. Meanwhile, it is applied by many European research projects and multiple research groups have developed extensions like timing and power analysis for cosimulation with SystemC. This workshop will provide QEMU users with a forum to exchange ideas and to join forces. One focus will be HW/SW cosimulation, but other topics related to QEMU emulation acceleration are also welcome. Additionally, it will provide beginners with basic QEMU information and an overview of the different research and applications. However, there does not exist any workshop or users’ group for the QEMU community yet. This will be the first event of this kind nationally and internationally.

Estimated for Target Numbers of Participants:

We are aware that there are many QEMU users and groups in domain of Instruction Set Simulation and HW/SW cosimulation. Additionally, we received a lot of interest from major industry for an introduction and an overview of ongoing work. Above organizers have multiple contacts to the QEMU groups and to industry who already expressed interest. We are definitely heading to 30+ participants. However, it is hard to estimate as it is the first event. Due to experience from other comparable starting initiatives, 30+ is a more pessimistic estimation.

Tentative Format:

The workshop is planned to fit into the DATE workshop format 8:30am-4:30pm.

  • 08:30 QEMU Introduction/Tutorial (60 Minutes)
  • 09:30 Invited Session 1 (2 invited presentations, 60 Minutes)
  • 10:30 Break
  • 11:00 Invited Session 2 (3 invited presentations, 90 Minutes)
  • 12:30 Lunch
  • 13:30 Paper Presentation Session 1 (2-4 presentations, 60 Minutes)
  • 14:30 Break
  • 15:00 Paper Presentation Session 2 (3-6 presentations, 90 Minutes)

For the introduction, the organizers will contact FabriceBellard, the chief scientist behind QEMU. For the second part, the organizers will invite representatives of active QEMU research groups for presentations (Invited sessions). For this it is planned to invite key presentations of TIMA, University of Paderborn, FZI, University of Barcelona, and University of Verona. In the afternoon, there will be presentation of submitted papers. Due to the quality and number of submissions either 15, 20 or 30 minutes presentations are planned. Each presenter is asked to prepare a complementary poster which will motivate discussions during the breaks. For paper submission the workshop will publish a call for papers with a Jan 14, 2011, submission deadline.
