This latest PRIDE list of placements and courses is not complete, for the autumn, it will be added to. It was my goal to get this latest offer out by May 1st. I and our European partners have tried to react to your requests and needs and in May I hope to visit more of you. PRIDE is supported by the EU Erasmus Plus programme and is an adult education staff mobility partnership. Participants are drawn from a UK consortium of partners from (mainly) Northern England and Scotland….

The places are fully funded apart from getting to the UK departure point.
All the places revolve around dedicated training courses from the ‘Green Village’ suite of certified units, apart from the odd ‘job-shadowing’ and teaching post. They were created over a 3-year period by 8 EU partners led by Grampus Heritage. All the courses carry ECVET points as well as certification for CPD.
SLOVAKIA – Introduction to Horse-Logging – 5 places
29th May to 4thJune 2016
Apologies for the late advertising of this opportunity, the risk assessment process has been exhaustive. It is essential that participants have some experience of handling horses; you go to Slovakia to work with horses on timber extraction, not just to watch ! Although Slovakia has a modern and progressive forestry sector, the terrain plus environmental considerations means there are still many thousands of horses engaged in horselogging/ snigging. You will be based in HontianskeMoravce, in south Slovakia and fly to and from Budapest. You will learn how to care for working horses and the basic techniques of extracting cut hardwood and softwood timber from the forest with a properly equipped horse. You will also attend the competition with horse logging inBaďannear Levice, some 30 km to the west.There will be cultural visits, including the Slovak National stud at Topol'čianky,Dudince Roman spa and the UNESCO World Heritage town of BanskaStiavnica.

CYPRUS – Shepherd Inspired Fashion – 6 places
3rd to 10th June 2016
Wool and leather/suede from sheep and goats, are sustainable local products. Combine these with the sparkling olive groves, herb-smelling marquis-covered hillsides and azure sea ….a rural fashion trend might emerge? ‘Green Village’ was all about environmental, cultural, social and economic sustainability in Europe’s countryside. Cyprus suffers from rural depopulation as do all EU states but there are ways of creating jobs in the countryside that appeal to young people and use natural and cultural assets. This programme delivers a ‘Village fashion’ course and includes ‘vourka making’ (traditional shepherds bag), some simple weaving, creating, a fashion show and photoshoot. Cypriot shepherds used to decorate their vourkas with things they found like bones, feathers, old ceramic pieces, fossils, we include in the programme some ‘found jewellery’ design and creation.
SLOVAKIA – Iron Age Roundhouse Construction
13th to 20thJune 2016 – 6 places
Based in the beautiful Slovakian village of Lišov surrounded by meadows and forest. The village is famous for ‘cave houses’ but also the nearby ‘Fossa gigantea’ – an ancient defensive wall that predates the Roman presence south of the Danube (this part of Central Europe was never in the Roman Empire, although they traded with the local ‘Celtic’ people. All along the wall, especially to the west, would have been Iron Age ‘Celtic’ settlements. At Lišov Museum, the intention is to recreate over some years a reconstruction of a small sample section of the Fossa gigantean and an Iron Age village. We start now with the first roundhouse. Participants will work with hazel, willow and oak timbers and ash roof poles to make the building in an authentic way. Also in the programme a cultural visit to the World Heritage town of BanskaStiavnica, the Fossa gigantean, cave house visit and some free time in Budapest. Flights are to Budapest, with road transport (1.5 hours) to Slovakia. Participants will complete a certified training programme from ‘Green Village’ entitled ‘Reconstructing Built Heritage’.
CYPRUS – Living with the Enemy – 6 places
10th to 17th June 2016
In the mountain villages of PanoLefkara, Kato Lefkara and Kato Drys there is a strong lace making and silversmithing tradition. In PanoLefkara there was a vibrant Turkish Cypriot community until 1963. Ethnic cleansing and political manoeuvring from Turkey, Greece and other countries has led to a division of the population all over the island. A catastrophic series of events in 1974 culminated in the invasion of Turkish troops and the establishment of a UN administered ‘Green Line’ that divides the country and the capital, Nicosia. The lace making tradition was shared by both communities, even after the Turkish Cypriots left PanoLefkara and re-settled for 11 years in Kofinou. Grampus and local partners from both communities, work to re-establish inter-community / bilateral links through art and craft. This has led to the creation of ‘Pleumistra – Green Village’ with lace and silver going into fashion, also shared crafts such as mosaic, basket making, cookery and woodcarving. Participants will learn how non-controversial and engaging subjects can bring former enemies back together; the certified ‘Green Village’ course, ‘Engaging Communities’ is delivered.
BULGARIA – Balkan Craft Extravaganza – 6 places
4th to 10th September 2016
The StaraPlaninamountains of Bulgaria are known for their wonderful landscape but also their traditional crafts. Local wool is a sustainable natural product and this placement focuses on woollen crafts with some traditional cookery.You take part in the Folklore Festival of the Devetaki Plateau in Agatovo village, tasting local food, culinary demonstration, a walk to remains of the Medieval fortress Gradat near Kramolin village, visit the church in Kramolin. Dinner with traditional meals. In the Plateau villages focus on knitting gloves and crochet. Move to the Ethnographic complex Etara to take part in crafts– dying with natural colours, making woollen bracelets, decoration with braids. Visit to Gabrovo – House of Humour. Drive to Drashkovapolyana village – night and dinner in EcoArt guest house. Ceramic training. Troyan monastery and National Crafts exhibition in Oreshak village. Training in pyrography & wooden button-making. Sheep & shepherding ( may include milking / cheese / yoghurt) in Teteven in the mountains plus a chance to see horselogging, with the horses carrying billets of wood equally strapped to both flanks.
ESTONIA – Living on an Island – sustainable lifestyles – 6 places
10th to 17th September.
Based on the Estonian Island of Saaremaa with GillekeKopamees, who once took part in ‘Woolfest’ with “From Sheep to Dress”. The whole process of using local wool is the focus -washing sheep in the sea, shearing, spinning, designing & making - also something about 'leaf hay' for sheep & cattle (like we used to do in the Lakes) + herbs for health & dyeing. There is also a chance to learn something of the Viking history of the island (a major boat burial was excavated there in 2010 – re-writing the history books regarding the start of the Viking Age) and see how young people learn traditional skills in order to put culture to work for a sustainable future. Overnight and some time to explore Tallinn. People living on the island are independent spirits and are determined to retain their young people through training and job creation.
CYPRUS – Forests, trees & climate change – 7 places
10th to 16th October.
Cyprus took part in the EU supported “COST Action on Climate Change”, which examined the impact on forests. The group will focus on arid land afforestation in Koshi forest and at Athalassa State Nursery they see how native species are made available to gardeners and hotels to retain valuable seed stocks. There is a visit into the Troodos mountains with a focus on the EU ‘Life’ Juniper project and a look at sustainable ancestral use of forests and water. At Kato Drys they begin a process of protecting ancient wood pastures and sowing acorns to begin establishing replacement oak forests lost through fuelwood and charcoal production. We look at the environmental impact of major sustainable energy projects (solar & wind farms). We also hope to go (sustainable) mushroom gathering and focus on cooking using only wood as fuel from village woodlots and invasive species clearings. We visit ancient (1000 year-old) olive trees managed by the Forest Department and hear about the management of this precious resource
