Buddy Program Mentor Job Description

  • Understanding that being a Big Buddy takes work
  1. Goal: Spend a minimum of 3-4 visits per month for one year.

Consistent contact is necessary to establish and maintain a meaningful relationship.

  • Take the initiative in arranging activities with your Little Buddy. Do not expect that your Little Buddy will call or initiate contact with you.
  • Plan specific, free/inexpensive activities at convenient times for you and your Little Buddy. Make sure to keep the parent/guardian informed of all of your activities.
  • Ifany week you are unable to see your Little Buddy, be sure to call to let him/her know and to maintain consistent contact.
  1. Your case manager will contact you every month during the first six months.

It is imperative that you call or email your case manager back within 48 hours of receiving a message from her.

  • Your case manager can assist you in building a positive working relationship. It is important that you share any concerns or questions with her.
  • Immediately report any changes of job, home, address, and telephone number so that we may be able to contact you immediately if necessary. Please report any changes in the information provided on your application and at the interview, including but not limited to: driving record, marital status, or legal status.
  • Call with all concerns you may have – small or large – about your time with your Little Buddy. Your Case Manager will help you navigate problems while they are small, before they grow into larger issues.
  1. Attend at least three group activities within the first year of being matched.
  • They’re fun! And a perfect opportunity for your Little Buddy to experience new activities.
  • Our activities are also a great way for you and your Little Buddy to get to know other Buddies
  • Remember that you are responsible for your Little Buddy at all times on all outings. Never leave your Little Buddy with another adult other than his or her parent or guardian.
  1. Attend at least one Big Buddy Forum after the 1st year.
  • These are meant to be a way for you to get new ideas, offer and receive help from other Buddies, and hear what other Big Buddies are doing with their Little Buddies. Adults only!
  1. Contact your Case Manager if:
  • You have any problems at all regarding your match.
  • You have a major life change
  • You have a wonderful story to share about your Little Buddy
  • You have any questions about your time together
  • You want to process anything at all between you and your Little Buddy or his/her family
