Region V Update
Region Updates: This update is devoted to our upcoming election for Region V VP and also an update on the State of Oregon. Have a great fall and I look forward to seeing some of at the National ACTE Conference.
Charles Gallagher for Region V VP: The Arizona Fellows Program gave me insight into what ACTE is all about and what it takes to be a good leader. I served as Arizona's State President, as a Region V Policy Committee Member, and I'm now running the Region V Fellow Program, so I can appreciate what it takes to run an organization. I know it takes many people to run an organization properly, but strong leadership skills make it function. I believe I have those skills, and I enjoy working with others to accomplish what is in the best interest of our organization.
When I became Arizona's ACTE President, I asked our members to "Step up to the Plate" and get involved with their affiliates at the State, Regional and National Levels; creating a natural progression. This led to an increase in ACTE membership. I will also do this on the Regional Level. I believe teachers love what they do and have a great passion for it, and getting involved in ACTE has reignited that passion for me. I understand the importance of spreading the word about the importance of CTE and the work we do to provide the true balance to all education.
Dr. Erie V. Johnson, Director of the South Kern and Kern River Valley Centers of Cerro Coso Community College is running for ACTE, Region 5, Vice President. As an educator in Career Technical Education his entire career, Dr. Johnson welcomes the opportunity to represent Region 5 offering his knowledge and expertise at a time of national economic crisis. This is a time of great change in the United State. CTE is the instructional delivery system that can develop an educated and prepared workforce that is adaptable and competitive to meet immediate and future workforce needs. California's diverse economic base of agriculture, natural resources, aerospace, aviation, shipping, film, and computer industries have all benefited from great CTE programs. This is an excellent opportunity to share Region 5 successes in CTE to shape a positive public image of vocational programs by sharing their significant contributions to the economy. Dr. Johnson has served in the following Region 5 positions: Policy Board for Alaska, 2002-2005; Policy Board for Oregon, 2006-2009; Alaska ACTE Board of Directors and State President, 1993-2005; and Oregon ACTE Board of Directors, 2007-2009. Dr. Johnson holds an Educational Doctorate in Community, Career, and Technical and Adult Education from the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, Colorado.
CTE in the State of Oregon
During one of the worst economic periods of recent times, in the 12th hour of our last legislative session, (House Bill) HB 3362, was passed unanimously. This bill is aimed at stimulating growth and providing renewed opportunities for CTE at the middle and secondary levels of education. The bill was funded at a minimal level, but should be considered not only a victory, but a more than token nod of approval and support given today's economic climate.
The bill provides for a CTE Revitalization Grant which will allow and promote the expansion of CTE in new and innovative ways. The target appears to be a formula that relies heavily on partnerships with business and industry, multiple layers of educational interests, and community needs.
Oregon has begun the collaborative process of determining how to embrace and roll out the new national product branding campaign for, CTE, Learning that works for America/Oregon. We have met as a state team of stakeholders to explore the components and inherent messages that are embedded, implied, and expected for successful product recognition and efficacy. Our agreed upon approach is toward a meaningful and methodical roll out so as to, get it right the first time.
As one of the first states to embrace Math in CTE and partner with the National Research Center for CTE, (NRCCTE), our efforts continue toward professionally developing all CTE teachers in the discipline and process of enhancing CTE lesson plans. The relationships developed between CTE instructors and their academic math partners, has proved invaluable. We are now affording a similar process for Literacy in CTE, also a result of the NRCCTE research.
