COURSE DESCRIPTION: A co-ed course designed to increase the aquatic abilities of the students by reviewing basic swimming skills and strokes as well as introducing them to a series of fitness swimming skills to improve their basic coordination, stamina, and endurance. Each student will work towards demonstrating and teaching 5 of the 6 swimming strokes.
PREREQUISITES: The student must be able to swim a minimum of 25 yards of the following competitive strokes: freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke. In addition the student MUST be comfortable with swimming, treading, or entering deep water.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1. propel in both prone and supine positions.
2. combine arm and leg movements effectively.
3. coordinate breathing with arm and leg movements.
4. complete a minimum of 50 yards of the following strokes: sidestroke, breaststroke, backstroke, elementary back, and freestyle
5. understand proper swimming etiquette
6. demonstrate and teach 5 of the 6 swimming strokes
STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Swimming history sheet must be filled out
2. Students must provide their own towels, caps, goggles.
3. Dress: Students must provide their own suits. No cutoffs, bikinis, etc…Goggles are strongly recommended.
GRADING SCALE
Participation Grade = 5 points / class = up to 25 points
Partial Engagement = 3 points / class
Did not attend = 0 points
Final Teaching Attempt = 10 points
TOTAL = 35 POINTS
A 32-35 points
B 28-31 points
C 24-27 points
D 20-24 points
F 19 points
a. NOTE: 2x late = 1 Absence
b. Late = > 15 minutes after class has started.
c. Attendance: With only 5 classes; students are required to attend every session
d. If excessive excused absences require the student to take an “I” (incomplete grade), the incomplete grade can only be converted to an appropriate letter grade by the student repeating the course in a subsequent semester.
