2014-2015
All HJHMS students are required to read 2 book on from the list provided below. The list contains both fiction and nonfictions stories.
Students will be required to complete the Outside Reading Report on the book. This will help them recall specific information, characters and important events about the story before taking the AR test.
Students will take the AR test (summer reading) in the ELA teacher’s classroom when they are assigned by the teacher. It is the student’s responsibility to be prepared to take test in the ELA class. It is the ELA teacher’s responsibility to ensure that they are given the opportunity to take the test in the classroom. You will be required to take an Accelerated Reading quiz on both books by August 29, 2014. Students will also be required to complete the interactive journal projects listed below for their summer reading book. All upcoming 7th & 8th grade students are required to read TWO books from our summer reading list and create an interactive response journal for both books. One composition notebook can be used to document the interactive response journals for both books.

Basic Guidelines for Interactive Response Journal for Summer Reading
· Obtain a composition notebook or spiral notebook
· Design a title page for your summer reading book on the first page of your journal
· Divide your book into at least 10 reading sections (by chapter or chapters)
· On the left side (backs of pages) document:
o 3 unknown vocabulary words, the sentence from your book that included that word, and the definition you found when looking it up.
o A summary of that chapter or chapter set (at least 5 sentences: 1-introduction, 3 - supporting sentences, 1- conclusion)
· On the right side (fronts of pages) document your personal reflection with one of the following options:
o A drawing
o A poem
o A letter to a character
o A crossword or other puzzle
o Analysis of a quote or literary device
o Journal entry
o Graphic Organizers
o KWL charts
o Foldables of your choosing (including information fromfurther research (like a Greek myth for The Odyssey), cause/effect, character analysis, sequencing, timelines, etc.)
