Machine safety: Selected system solutions for food production
Visit Schmersal at the AnugaFoodTec from 24th until the 27th March 2015 in Cologne: Hall 4.2, Stand 018
Wuppertal / Cologne, 24 March 2015. At Anuga FoodTec the Schmersal Group presents the latest generation of safety components and systems, specifically suited for food processing and packaging machinery. In these industries, equipment and facilities often operate with very high speed and short cycles.Schmersal safety systems are tailored to these requirements and are characterized by reliable availability as well as flexible and hygienic application usages.
PROTECT PSC1: Programmable, modular and multifunctional
The safety controller PROTECT PSC1 consists of freely programmable compact PLCs with IO extension modules for signal processing of mechanical and electronic safety switchgear. In addition you can safely monitor up to 12 axes using the extensive features. The compact controllers can be equipped with a universal communication interface.
The PSC1 is not only compact and modular in design, but also extremely flexible. It has the advantage that only one single piece of hardware is required to establish a connection with all common fieldbus systems. This saves space, reduces storage costs and increases flexibility in the application.
Safety sensor with RFID technology: RSS 16
The RFID safety sensor RSS 16 is based on the design of the AZ 16 which is a classic Schmersal product. This versatile design is now available as a non-contact system. With the RSS 16 the identification of the target is using the RSS technology developed by Schmersal: A technical safety modified RFID signal is responsible for communication between the transmitter and receiver. This technique creates the conditions that the user can select between three different encoding options for the RSS 16 - the advantage is a higher manipulation protection. In addition, the safety sensor is available as a magnet stop so that the designer no longer needs a separate stop with latching. The terminal compartment provides additional flexibility during installation. For example, the user can realize a cost-effective and customized series combination of switch to switch.

Compact design: the position switch PS 116
The position switches of the series PS 116 are for the position detection and monitoring of moving parts on machinery and plants as well as for lateral or pivotable protection equipment. They are extremely compact, very robust and extremely versatile. The dimensions of the PS 116 are smaller than the standard switch. This allows them also to be installed in confined spaces. The protection type IP66 or IP67 allows the systems in which the PS 116 are integrated to be easily cleaned.

Application finder for the food industry
A good overview of the food oriented system components from Schmersal is available with the extended application finder, which is now available online:
This now also includes manufacturing equipment for food manufacturing and processing. The App Finder shows application examples such as the protection of flaps and hygienic solutions; products are clearly illustrated using animations. As of April 2015, the extended App Finder is also available for iPad users in the Apple Store and available for users of Android and Windows systems.
