Key Concept 1 – Pentecost is an important event recorded in Scripture (L1-3)
1)This is what happened at Pentecost – the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit who came down on them and rested on their heads as a tongue of fire and they were changed and they became bold and full of courage.
2)This is what happened before Pentecost – Jesus promised to send his Holy Spirit who would stay with them and guide and strengthen them when he was no longer with them.

Key Concept 3 – The Holy Spirit is symbolised as anointing with oil, a dove, the finger of God and a cloud (L4)

Oil – symbolises the Holy Spirit because oil soaks into things, like the spirit soak into people’s hearts and souls.
Oil has been used to anoint people since the time of the Old Testament. Anointing marks people out as special and is chosen to do something special, eg be a king
Oil strengthens them to do what they are called to do.
A dove – symbolises the Holy Spirit because it symbolises renewal as in the story of Noah when the dove brought back the olive branch to show that the earth could be lived on again. A dove rested on Jesus at his baptism and strengthened him for his mission of preaching, healing and teaching the good news.
The finger of God – is an Old Testament symbol of the Holy Spirit. The 10 Commandments were written by the finger of God. In the New Testament Luke talks about Jesus healing by the finger of God which means Jesus healed people by the power of the Holt Spirit.
A cloud – is the symbol used in the stories of the Transfiguration and the Ascension of Jesus. In both stories the cloud surrounds Jesus and hides him from view. Then the cloud moves and reveals Jesus is the Son of God as he transfigured and that he will come again in glory as he ascends to his Father in heaven. In both stories it is through a cloud that the Holy Spirit makes Jesus known to people.
Key Concept 4 – The Holy Spirit is the bearer of holiness and grace (L5)
10)How do people become holy and share in God’s love?
People share in God’s love by allowing God into their lives.
God reaches out to people inviting them to share in God’s own life
Through the gift of God’s grace because God’s life is in them
People open their hearts to God when they pray and in this way they grow connected to God
The Holy Spirit helps people to listen to what God is saying to them deep in their hearts.
When people read the Word of God they can learn what God is saying to them and they can receive spiritual strength and mana to respond to God in their lives.
People become holy when they receive the Eucharist and the power of the Holy Spirit helps them to make loving choices in their lives.
The Holy Spirit works though people such as parents, teachers and friends who give wise guidance that helps people to respond to the promptings of the Spirit.
