KagoshimaMuseum of Environment: Planet Earth and its Future is a facility for people to learn about environment so that they can take eco-friendly action. It was established in Kagoshima city, in October 2008.The museum tells that our daily life and business activities have various influences on future environment. On August 20, the participants of the 9th Working-level Conference will visit the museum. In this issue, we would like to show you the outline of the facility before you visit there.
The basic principles are following four points:
- Connect peoplewith a strong partnership so that they can enjoy learning, participating, and exchanging.
- Promote education of people and system building by collaborating with citizens, and disseminate the results.
- Support people to lead a pro-environment life and encourage totake eco-friendly action.
- Develop people to actively engage in environmental conservation activities.
Not only is the roof of a uniquely shaped building with gentle curve, but also the entire site of the museum covered with green grass.
The museum also prevents room temperature rise and reduces the heat island effect by greening the roof and the site. It has also natural air-conditioner using groundwater, air circulations system using the stable underground temperature, and solar electricity system (solar panels). In this way, the museum is utilizing various natural energies.
Inside the museum is divided into 4 zones. By using things that have drifted ashore as an example, ZONE1: “Everything in the world is linked to each other”reminds us that environmental issues are shared by the entire world, and our life affects each other. ZONE2: “The Earth has already had more than it can stand” tells that the Earth has greatly changed by mankind’s activities, and it is facing a crisis.ZONE3: What we have done, and what must be done?”tells that our daily life has great impact on the global environment. ZONE4: “Return to the past and think about the future called today” makes us think about the transition of lifestyle from that of 40 years ago to present“useful, fast, and clean” life.
In addition, the museum offers participatory/ experience-based environment classes, recycling workshops, environment-friendly cooking workshops. Not only people from Kagoshima city, but also from outside the city and even from other prefectures visit there. We can see that the establishment of the museum raised public environmental awareness.

Fukuoka City Public Library is not merely a public library, but also a film archive, which is for preserving films as cultural property. Recently, many nationalgovernments have set up film archives, and some of them have joined the International Federation of Film Archives, to preserve domestic and foreign film heritages. In Japan, only the Film Centre of Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art and FLFA have joined the International Federation of Film Archives. Therefore, FLFA is the only archive which has joined the International Federation of Film Archives from Japanese local government.
FLFA is a significant Asian film archive, which has about 470 Asian films of the world. As the city of Fukuoka also holds the annual Fukuoka International Film Festival since 1991, it has been making enormous effort to promote Asian film cultures.Focusing on the films from various Asian countries and regions including the onesshowing at the Fukuoka International Film Festival, FLFA has preservedthem as cultural heritages, and recovered the lost films with high technology. Let's see what efforts FLFA has made to ensure the future of these inheritances.
