North West Provincial Legislature Hosts Women’s Parliament 2011

The North West Provincial Legislature will be holding its annual Women’s Parliament on Friday August 12, 2011, in the Legislature Chamber at 09h00.

The event, themed, “Working together to enhance women’s economic empowerment through skills development and sustainable jobs”, will focus on capacitating women to confront challenges of joblessness, poverty eradication and skills mentoring.

The following thematic areas will be discussed; Access to land and agricultural economic opportunities, funding and skills mentoring; The role of young women in the developmental agenda of state focusing on trade and industry; and Women’s economic empowerment and sustainable jobs – working to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger.

Women’s day in South Africa represent an affirmation of the contributions women made in the struggle against colonial and apartheid oppression historically.

It has been reported in the latest Millennium Development Country Report 2010 that there is a challenge to proactively address the unintended consequences of progressive legislation, policy and regulation to ensure that progress on gender equality remains on track.

Deputy Speaker of the North West Legislature, Hon. Motlalepula Rosho, said there is a need to promote gender equality and empower women within the economic sector.

“There must be creation of programmes to empower women in a variety of areas such as access to land and farming, business opportunities, funding and skills development opportunities.

“Measures to also eliminate violence against women must be prioritised,” said Hon. Rosho.

Women attending Women Parliament 2011 are those from the workshops in the different regions as well as from the Mafikeng locale.

All Members of the North West Provincial Legislature will attend and Hon. Rosho will lead the delegation.
