Cheer Competition

On Saturday, January 14, Uwharrie Charter Academy-Middle Grades cheerleading squad won second place at the North Carolina Cheerleading Coaches Association. Coach Carter and Ms. Loftis have worked really hard with the cheer team to make sure that they were ready to compete.
“It was a great experience, and it was very fun,” says seventh grader Alyssa Millikan. This is her first year cheering for Uwharrie Charter Academy-Middle Grades. Millikan added, “We were blessed with a great competition.”
“It was exciting and very adrenaline rushed,” says sixth grader Olivia Mabe. “It was a very good experience, and I will do it again,” Mabe added.
“I was very pleased with how the girls did,” says Coach Carter. “We had to change everything two days before their competition, so they did good under the pressure. They’re going to compete again and hopefully win first place. They are the most fun group of girls to be around,” concluded Coach Carter.
UCA-MG won a close second with Oak Grove Middle School winning first. They were up against five other schools.

Fifth grade coming to UCA

As you all know, Uwharrie Charter is adding a fifth grade next year. The lottery will be held on March 25th to see who our new fifth and sixth grade Eagles will be.
For these new students, UCA-MG will have to add four new teachers and four new classrooms. The fifth graders will not be having STEAM with the middle grades but with other fifth graders.
Mrs. O’Brein said, “I'm looking forward to meeting all of the new fifth graders and being able to give the middle grades (students) a chance to be role models.”

Writing for Our Future
Featured Teacher: Mrs. Bryant

This week’s featured teacher is Mrs. Bryant the seventh grade ELA and Journalism STEAM teacher here at UCA. Mrs. Bryant explained why ELA is important by saying, “ELA basically equips students with the skills to be able to communicate effectively throughout their lives.”
Mrs. Bryant is in her seventh year teaching seventh grade ELA. She went to college at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Her favorite thing about UCA is that teachers are encouraged to try different approaches to teaching their subject matter, and she says the students are great.
Mrs. Bryant has two kids - a six-year-old daughter named Ellie and an eight-year-old son named Colton. An interesting fact about Mrs. Bryant is that she pole vaulted in high school along with playing basketball and volleyball.

UCA Sports

On Friday, January 14th the UCA-MG wrestlers participated in a tournament located in Charlotte, North Carolina. Aiden Carter and Lucas Wright took home second place in their weight classes and Noah Gooch brought home fifth. The team has another match at 4:30 on Monday, January 23rd at Triad Math and Science.
The girls and boys basketball teams have an away game today against Clover Garden. They also have games next Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. Monday they will play CPLA at home. Wednesday they will play Corner Stone at home, and Thursday they will play away at Guilford Prep.
STEAM of the Week

This week’s STEAM of The Week is Journalism. This STEAM is divided into two teams - one that creates the broadcast and one that creates the newspaper. Both groups are student lead, but they can get help from the teacher.
The class aims to produce a newspaper and a broadcast that talk about events inside and out of the school. Also, the class is in charge of the yearbook, and the students are responsible for making it, marketing it, and monitoring sales.
The class is taught by Mrs. Bryant, who also teaches seventh grade ELA.

Opinion: Meryl Streep’s Speech

Meryl Streep won an award at the Golden Globes and used the moment to trash our President-Elect Donald J. Trump. What Trump said may have not been right, but it happened over a year ago, people need to get over it. People are saying she has freedom of speech, and of course she can say what she wants, but that doesn’t make it right. She also used her fame as a platform to talk about this. Once again she can do it, that doesn’t mean she should have. She got famous by entertaining people, not politics.
Mrs. Streep is very famous and accomplished; there are lots of people she can talk trash about - our President-Elect is not one of them. Donald Trump has accomplished more in two years than Meryl Streep has and ever will in her entire life. Mr. Trump maybe should not have mocked the reporter, but he still got it done. He has already won the approval of the people of the United States, so he must be doing something right.
This was not the time or place to criticize our president-elect. She has just won this glorious award and everyone in that building is smiling. Then she decides to bring up something that someone who had nothing to do with the award, did over a year ago. She turned most of those smiles into frowns and crying people. She had no reason to do this, and before people agree with her, they should ask themselves“Why?”
