A HOUSE RESOLUTION
TO RECOGNIZE THE MANY CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE WELLBEING OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA BY THE South Carolina Trucking Association AS IT CELEBRATES ITS SEVENTYFIFTH ANNIVERSARY IN 2008.
Whereas, the South Carolina Motor Carriers Association was founded in 1932 at Greenville, South Carolina; and
Whereas, in 1933 the association incorporated and changed its name to the Motor Transportation Association of South Carolina, Inc. with offices in Columbia; and
Whereas, in the early days the association represented both truck and bus operators and for many years maintained offices in the former Columbia and Jefferson Hotels and later moved to 2425 Devine Street where it has a modern office complex; and
Whereas, William B. Love was manager for twentysix years, was succeeded in 1963 by Samuel L. Boylston, an attorney and former member of the House of Representatives from Orangeburg County, and after his retirement was succeeded by J. Richards Todd in 1988 where he remains the president and chief executive officer; and
Whereas, the association has grown from a few trucking companies in the 1930’s to seven hundred thirty trucking companies in 2008 and has been a valuable source of information and statistics pertaining to trucking; and
WHEREAS, the association has published HiLights of South Carolina Trucking including its popular Exhaust column, since 1937, along with many other periodicals and information documents that have served as an invaluable resource for educating the public on the contributions of the trucking industry; and
Whereas, South Carolina trucking has grown from ten trucks in 1907 to over one hundred thousand in 2008 and pays over six hundred thirtyseven million dollars annually in state and federal highway user taxes and fees; and
Whereas, trucks serve all areas of South Carolina and are the only transportation for over eighty percent of South Carolina communities and play a major role in transportation import and export movement from South Carolina ports; and
Whereas, with one of every eleven citizens in South Carolina involved in the transportation industry, trucking has made major contributions to the economic growth and development of the State; and
Whereas, the association’s board of directors has been composed of successful and publicspirited business leaders from throughout the State, which has blessed the association over the years with outstanding leadership; and
Whereas, the following former dedicated leaders have been designated as Directors Emeritus: Mr. X. O. Bunch, Jr., of Charleston, Mr. Robert Beatty of Columbia, Mr. R. D. Moseley of Charleston, Mr. W. T. Cassels, Jr., of Columbia, Mr. Charlie Tapp of Duncan, Mr. Pat Carey of Rock Hill, Mr. Clinton Lemon of Barnwell, Mr. Richard Few of Johns Island, Mr. Roy Dooley of Greer, Mr. Richard Infinger of Charleston, Mr. Arden Lemon of Charleston, Mr. Joey Moore of Manning, Mr. Tommy Glasscock of Sumter, Mr. Angus Senn of Silverstreet, and Mr. Grady Randolph of Gaffney; and
Whereas, association Chairman of the Board Ken Willingham of Charleston has been a most active and engaged leader, who is well recognized and respected by many members of the South Carolina General Assembly; and
Whereas, under the leadership of President and Chief Executive Officer J. Richards Todd and the current professional staff of G. M. “Scott” Murray, Vice President of Safety and Compliance; William F. Ross, Governmental Affairs; Taryn ShekitkaWest, Director of Communications and Events; B. Scott Woodberry, Director of Marketing; Tonya P. Landrith, Manager of Administration; and, Jennifer Patterson, Intern, the South Carolina Trucking Association has developed many friendships among the membership, related industries, organizations and members of the General Assembly, and state and federal government agencies; and
Whereas, the association is well respected and has been very successful in its efforts to improve highway safety and the efficiency of trucking in South Carolina. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize the many contributions to the wellbeing of the State of South Carolina by the South Carolina Trucking Association as it celebrates its seventyfifth anniversary in 2008.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Ken Willingham, chairman of the board and J. Richards Todd, president of the association.
