Job Title: Heritage Restoration Apprentice

Responsible To: Regional Heritage engineering Team (RHEC),

Leader, Construction Manager,

Assistant Director Transport and Industry

Key Internal Relationships:Buildings team, Site support team, Heritage engineering team.

Purpose:Assisting the Regional Heritage Engineering Centre to carry out all aspects of onsite restoration work both workshop based and out on the museum site. Working under the direction and guidance of an experienced mentor, support the delivery of our facilities and maintenance services whilst working towards a Level 2/3 in Construction Crafts to achieve the skills and experience to become a fully operational tradesperson.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Act as an ambassador and advocate for Beamish Museum and help to deliver the vision of Beamish’s Business Plan – ‘putting the visitor first’, creating a living, working, open-air museum that tells the story of everyday working life in the North East of England.
  • Carry out any basic joinery and metal work using hand tools.
  • Carry outmoving, storing and handling of materials including reclaimed wood and transport vehicles.
  • Work on Restoration projects (both historical and modern) as allocated by the Museum with the support of an onsite mentor to an exceptional level of workmanship and quality.
  • Gain knowledge and skills in the application of paint and protective finishes such as stains, primers and vanishes.
  • Carry out any cleaning of the workshop and equipment as instructed.
  • Operate selected workshop equipment when trained to do so.
  • Assist the team with duties as instructed including work on vehicles and bodywork using methods for sympathetic repair of period woodwork and metal work.

  • Take part in the apprentice review process and complete any training required, and be capable of working independently in the final year of the apprenticeship.

Health and Safety
  • Be responsible for your own working safely on site (including wearing allocated PPE) and ensure the safety of visitors to areas surrounding the site.
  • Assist in compliance with all relevant legislation including CDM regulations, COSHH, PPE regulations and Health and Safety at Work Acts.

Team duties:
  • Take part in team and individual training as required.
  • Help deliver projects on time.
  • To assist other members of the Regional Heritage Engineering Centre with their duties when required.
  • Work in collaboration with all other Museum teams when required, especially the Engagement Teams who operate in the Museum period areas and the Site support team who oversee the development and maintenance of the Museum site.
  • Adhere to quality systems and operating procedures to facilitate the safe, smooth and timely delivery of services.
General responsibilities:
  • To carry out the duties of the post in accordance with the Museum’s Equal Opportunity Policy, Code of Conduct and Health and Safety legislation and regulations.
  • To carry out any other duties within the level of responsibility as may be determined from time to time.
