SALARY COMMENSURATE WITH EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
JOB SUMMARY
Under the direct supervision of the Principal Superintendent of Ag, this position performs multiple related functions in facilities, grounds, equipment and field cleaning and maintenance.
This is the only position at Desert performing custodial duties. Position performs grounds maintenance duties alongside other staff members.
The Desert Research & Extension Center (DREC) is a large and complex research center that provides professional management, land, labor and facilities for agricultural and environmental studies and educational outreach activities. DREC has 17 staff members within three units: Administration, Field Research and Physical Plant. DREC is comprised of 250 acres which accommodates 50 research projects year round and has 66,300 square feet of facilities. Research conducted on the Center includes studies in vegetable crop breeding and culture, irrigation management, soil salinity, improved varieties of grain and forage crops, emerging bio-energy crops, feedlot cattle studies, and control of various insects and pests. Researchers include those from University of California campuses, Cooperative Extension, USDA, and industry.
POSITION FUNCTIONS
45% CUSTODIAN
- Sweep, vacuum, mop, scrub, strip, wax, and polish floors by hand; empty waste receptacles; dust and polish furniture; wash windows; dust blinds; fill dispensers; clean and disinfect bathrooms, facilitates, and drinking fountains
- Sweep and wash outside walkways and entrances to facilities
- Erase blackboard, damp wipe chalk trays, and clean erasers
- Use a variety of hand tools and equipment
- Clean custodial equipment after each use
- Maintain and supply custodial locker
- Lock and unlock building doors; perform security checks; report safety and sanitary hazards
- Refer clients and users to appropriate personnel to resolve various issues or problems
- Complete all conference room set-ups and store furniture/supplies.
- Coordinate recyclable and refuse pick-ups; operate forklift and place refuse bins in designated areas.
35% GROUNDS MAINTENANCE
- Provide maintenance of Center grounds by performing planting; basining; staking; mowing; edging; rototilling; sod cutting; weeding; watering; and installation, establishment, and continued maintenance of plant materials and turfed areas.
- Vacuum and sweep lawns.
- Prune shrubs, ground covers and immature trees.
20% CENTER MAINTENANCE
- Assist in the maintenance and repair of components of the Center's permanent irrigation system including main line valves, alfalfa valves, drainage risers and underground pipe.
- Under direct supervision, spray weeds on roadways, ditches and field edges.
- Perform preventative service and repairs on all types of farm machinery including tractors, loaders, farm implements, trucks, pumps, vehicles and other machinery.
- Provide basic service, inspection and maintenance for equipment and assigned hand tools.
- Update service records.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Manipulate, or assemble objects; maneuver a loaded wheelbarrow.
- Lift, push, pull, or move objects .
- May work at heights up to 10 feet with a ladder.
- Stoop, bend, walk and stand for interrupted periods of time.
- Lift materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Work performed outdoors, year-round, in extreme weather and conditions in an institutional setting. Must wear protective clothing and equipment when required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Work irregular shifts, including weekends, holidays, and evenings.
- Work alone in buildings; in isolated areas; travel from building to building at night; and /or in a building with heavy traffic.
- May at times work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/pr infectious diseases are present. Hazards may include custodial cleaning supplies such as acid cleaners, ammonia, lie and bleach as well as blood and other potentially infectious materials, buildings or areas worked in may contain asbestos, PCB's, radioactive materials, industrial or laboratory chemicals, fuels, solvents, hazardous waste or other materials labeled hazardous.
- Wear and maintain approved safety equipment such as gloves and eye protection
- This position is subject to completion of a Pre-Placement Medical Exam provided by Occupational Health Services, given at no charge to the applicant.
- Employee shall participate in required preventative medical and medical monitoring programs which may include blood tests, immunizations, TB screening, Blood borne and Airborne
Pathogen training, etc., and are provided to meet Federal, State and University requirements.
- This position is subject to medical surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State laws and regulations and University Policy.
- Must possess or obtain a Forklift Operates Certificate within six months from date of hire.
- This position participates in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System.
- This position requires a California Driver's License.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience performing custodial work.
- Skill to perform routine grounds maintenance tasks.
- Knowledge of tree, plant and weed identification and care.
- Skill to use and maintain work-related equipment and tools.
- Knowledge of chemical weed control.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Skills to determine the kind of tools and equipment needed
to do a job.
- Knowledge of basic materials and equipment used in custodial work.
- Knowledge of cleaning solvents, soaps, waxes, and other related chemicals used in custodial work.
- Ability to provide customer service.
- Ability to follow all health and safety policies/procedures.
- Ability to learn and practice all security procedures related to unlocking, locking and securing of buildings and keys.
- Ability to resolve customer concerns in a timely manner.
- Skill to prioritize workload, work independently, or with others in a team-oriented, diverse workplace.
- Knowledge of mechanical equipment in order to: check for possible problems and avoid damage to equipment prior to starting; check the gas, oil, and equipment for damage and provide minor/basic servicing; recognize any mechanical problems which might occur during operation.
- Knowledge of safety requirements to: operate equipment, perform duties, perform spraying operations without detriment to self and others.
- Skill to drive truck equipped with manual transmission.
- Oral and written communication skills to effectively interact with supervisor and campus personnel.
