IVSA Nicaragua Trip 2014 General Information

Anticipated dates: August 25th – September 6th

-1 day mock clinic, 6 days of clinics, 3 days of travel, 2 days of fun

Estimated Costs: $1025.00

-Plane tickets: $650.00

-Room/board, IVSA support: $475.00

-SCAVMA Refund: (-)$100.00

-Scholarships: (-) $200.00 for up to 4 students

  • Based on a point system
  • Attendance at meetings, volunteering for help with projects, fulfilling committee requirements, obtaining grant money or extra donations (supplies or $$) for the trip, etc.

Commitments Prior to the trip:

-5 Base points required to participate in the trip

  • Base points include:
  • 5 base points
  • Mandatory meetings
  • Team committees (during the year)
  • Clinic Team duties
  • Extra points
  • Point for each hour or task in the barn
  • Drape cutting
  • Assigned exbo tasks
  • Extra work at the letter stuffing party
  • Donation retrieval
  • Sterilization/sx packs
  • T-shirts
  • 2 points for coordinating
  • 1 point for coming up with design
  • Additional points (toward the scholarships)
  • Things like working booths
  • Bringing things for lunch talks
  • Pet day help
  • Food fest
  • OVC booth/centerpiece
  • If you don’t attend a mandatory meeting--you lose a base point

-“Team” Assignments made winter term – anticipate weekly meetings

  • Clinic “Team” assigned Winter term include:
  • Pharmacy and Anesthesia
  • Surgeryand Recovery
  • Large Animal
  • Wellness/Intake
  • Diagnostics
  • Project “Team”
  • Corporate Donation Coordination, Community education and research, Fund-raising and donation collection, Drug Permit Coordination, Logistics, Veterinary recruitment and publicity, Sponsor a Nicaraguan animal, Silent Auction

-Educational seminars: Necessary to fulfill elective credit requirements

  • To take place during Spring term 2014
  • Last year included:
  • Dr. Gorman – 10-head scope session and sample collection wet lab
  • Dr. Mecham – Equine handling, hoof care and dental wetlab
  • Dr. De Ruaux – Tropical Canine diseases
  • Dr. Spina --Spay/Neuter Lecture
  • **Dr. Diconcetto – Anesthesia in the field + CPR techniques
  • **Small Animal Physicals
  • **Large Animal Physicals
  • ** = Mandatory Seminars that everyone participating in the trip must attend

-Miscellaneous

  • Planning/preparation/discussion meetings
  • Packing party – either in September before the trip or before you depart for the summer
  • Assisting with efforts of other teams
  • Recruiting veterinarians to come with us
  • Optional Spanish practice sessions
  • Additional Support during the Summer

Deadlines:

-Trip application due January 8th, 2014 (Wednesday after Winter Break)

-1stNon-refundable deposit due January 17th

-2ndNon-refundable deposit due June 6th
