- Ensure children cannot enter kitchen
- When using knives, do not talk to others at the same time.
- Make sure the task is done slightly below elbow level – make sure you can see what you are cutting.
- Blades should be sharpened regularly to ensure they are always sharp (using blunt knives requires greater force with more possibility for the knife to slip).
- Do not try to catch a falling knife – stand back and let it fall.
- Do not store knives with other utensils.
Hot water urn / Kitchen

- Ensure the urn is not placed near seating or in a high use bench area where people could be splashed

- Ensure plastic bags are stored away from children’s reach

- Specific weights cannot be prescribed because of combination of risk factors but control options are:
- Assess the weight of the child or load before lifting to check you can lift safely
- Use the semi squat technique to lift
- Hold the child or object close to your body – the further away from the body the load is – the greater the potential for harm.
- Do not twist your back while you are lifting – move your feet and keep your back straight.
- If lifting boxes, check you can’t make the load lighter before lifting. Hold boxes with the long side against your body, rather than pointing away from your body.
- Use a trolley if available.
- Place one foot in front of the other when placing heavier items into bottom of shelves to provide stability to the lumbar spine.
- Lift with your elbows pointing downwards towards the floor not out to the side.
Training

- Eliminate where possible by having a ramp up to the change table
