Steps for Bar Coding
- Activate patient
- Medication chart tab –> Barcode Worklist
- Scan medication
- Scan armband
- Give medication
- Select appropriate charting term
- Charting displayed in MAR
Bypass Medication Scan only when…
- The scan is unsuccessful after at least 3 attempts
- The medication was Not Given or Held
- Charting every 4 hour clearing of PCA medication
- Documenting administration of self-medications
- Charting a message order (e.g., Vascular access patency protocol)
Unable to Scan the Armband?
- Scan medication barcode as usual
- After 3 attempts to scan armband, type ac and patient’s clinic # in lower left corner, then Enter
- Use this process only when armband will not scan or patient is unavailable and medication is being held.

- Until scanner is repaired, bypassmedication scan and type ac and patient’s clinic number in lower left corner, then press Enter to bypass armband scan

- Tubes of medication - flatten tube so barcode is accessible, do not roll tube
- If a medication dose = 2 tablets (e.g. Tylenol) do not scan the same tablet twice, be sure to scan each individual tablet
- Documenting multiple meds - scan all of the meds, then scan patient arm band and administer meds
