Supplement 1. Sponge yields per transect and comments about sampling design. Some weights were estimated to omit weight of foreign material, to quantify material of missing specimens, or to establish a figure for the full weight of specimens of which only segments were available in the laboratory. Weights for the second half of the cruise are fresh wet weights and often could not be adjusted for adhering foreign materials, because not all material was kept. Weights for the first half of the cruise were quantified in the laboratory. Counts for the second half of the cruise (Gnaraloo) are an estimated minimum judging from field notes on specimen counts and photographs.During the second half of the cruise there was usually 1 category ‘misc. sponges’ of small or broken sponges. For the purpose of this table (but ignored for taxonomy and detailed analyses) it is here assumed that they represented at least 2 specimens per entry and that this category contained at least 1 extra species for this transect. Abbreviations: acc. – according, adj. – adjusted, avail. – available, estim. – estimate(d), incl. – including, mat. – material, ptly.– partly, rdd. – rounded, specm. – specimen, wt. – weight.

Supplement 2. Collated list of the 261CERF sponge species identified to OTU. The table is sorted in alphabetical order by Class, Order, Suborder, Family and Genus. Sampling areas are: 1 – Mandu in the north, 2 – Point Cloates in the central region, 3 – Gnaraloo in the south of Carnarvon Shelf. Identifications as of September 2010, i.e. after the Sponge Identification Workshop in Perth, but before the collection was vouchered and further analysed at the Western Australian Museum.‘Dominant’ species are marked with asterisks at species name that indicate number of transects a given species made up 1kg or more of a haul.
