SAC Minutes – January 11, 2017

Meeting called to order at 3:03 P.M. by Chair, Michael Levinson

I. December Minutes

Motion by Alex Price to accept December’s minutes with the following corrections to typos in Item III.H: to read Cambridge AICE Program and full Bright Futures Scholarship instead of Fulbright Future Scholarships; seconded by Ms. Fischer. All were in favor; motion to accept passed.

II. Budget Report – Michael Levinson

Current Balance - $16,705.03

Available - $15,705.03

III. Principal’s Report

A. The Cambridge Program performed their site visit yesterday. There are a few things that need to be done and we

should be up and running for next year.

B. Mr. Arrojo and staff are going to Indian Ridge Middle School speak to students and parents of incoming freshman, and

will answers any questions and concerns the audience has. Next Wednesday is “Freshman Invasion” here at Western

which will be an informative evening and showcase many of our Clubs, Activities, and Programs.

C. Saturday, January 28th we will be hosting a regional Robotics competition that will take over the whole school. This is

a very important competition for our region and we will then host the State level championship on February 25th.

D. On January 19th Piper High School will be hosting a Central Area Advisory meeting of SAF.

E. As of January 23rd, we are changing the drop off/pick up areas. When it goes into effect, there will only be one way in

and one way out of the front parking lot and the campus will then be much safer. Mr. Arrojo also hired an additional

security guard to help with campus security.

IV. PSD Election Results

The Professional Study Days Waiver failed to pass; the faculty did not approve it, meaning that it did not garner the 66.67% vote needed to move to the next phase of voting.

V. New Business

A. “FACE” or the “Family and Community Engagement” program is looking for some dedicated space in our school to provide information for and about family and community involvement. Many good ideas were brought forward for a designated bulletin board; more information is forthcoming

B. HOSA is hosting a Dodgeball Tournament on February 23rd to benefit the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI), from 3-6 p.m. The participants will be Western’s clubs completing against each other and the entry fee will be up to $100 per club.

VI. Guest Speaker Marty Kiar

Broward County Property Appraiser, Marty Kiar, introduced himself to the committee members as not only our property appraiser, but former graduate of our school. He was wonderful in explaining how taxes are assessed and offered his many services including examinations to determine property tax exemptions for area residents. We thanked Mr. Kiar for his time and extremely interesting information.

VIII. School Advisory Forum (SAF) – Co-Chairs: Mrs. Betty Davis and Mrs. Melina Markos

Mrs. Markos gave today’s SAF Report as follows:

SAF Meeting was held Jan. 11th and New Business highlights included DAC Updates on the 2017/18 School Start Date and FACE as well as entertaining the idea of SAC and SAF meeting after DAC does to encourage a more cohesive loop with the DAC and CAAC. The next DAC meeting is 12/14/16 at 6:30 p.m. (K.C. Wright Building), and CAAC meeting is 12/15/16 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. (Piper High School)
