SMEAR technical meeting 2015

General

Maintaining long term measurements as before, focus again in spring measurements (Ecosystem)

Hyytiälä

IT
New server for raw data replaces atm-raw2 2015/02
New Timo server (Linux CentOS) in active use
  • Used mainly as disk server, copies data from measurements computers to \\timo\smear and Helsinki. One can install Matlab to run scripts.
  • Readme files describing coying scripts etc.Plase keep diary, what you have changed there
  • Some very big data producers (e.g. TOFs, Eddys)
  • Separate disk space for these data (40 Tb)
  • One in Kumpula (Physics server), one in Hyytiälä (in future atm-raw3)
  • Access is very limited
  • Hyytiälä internet connection updated to 500 Mb/s early 2014
New desktop computers installed spring 2014
New data folders should be named without CAPS due properties of Linux
  • Some problems with Matlab scripts
  • The computers of measurement network shouldn't be used to internet surfing
  • Not actively updated to new Windows versions
  • Linux should be considered for measurement computers
  • We have serial logging programs for Linux
  • Remote access to measurement computers
  • VNC from other computers in the measurement network
  • SSH pipe from other VPNs inside university
  • Coogle Chrome remote desktop from wherever
  • The data flow and connections with FMI still undefined

  • Data visualisation for visitors
  • New TV-size screen in the main hut
  • Markku, Timo, Jaana and Tuukka scripts?
  • Data visualisation for duty people
  • All the data collected in UHEL will be open access in future
  • It is essential to get users for the collected data also outside our own group
  • Meta data very important (how, when, where, WHO)
  • Could there be new easier, more automatic ways to keep the meta data up to date?
  • Technicians have big responsibility over this
  • Also the data of scientific visitors
  • Automatic flagging (channel information) and event (calibrations, instrument changes...) collection of the data should be established ==> person needed?

main station

Ecosystem
  • Footprint kaulusten kasvillisuuskartoitus (Nuria Altimir kiinnostunut?). Jokainen kaulus (54) + valuma-alueen 7 kaulusta käytävä läpi, kuvat otettu 2014 mutta nyt täytyy tehdä paikan päällä (kesä-heinäkuussa). Synkronoi am. biomassainventoinninkanssa? Kesätyöntekijä?
  • CH4 N2O kaulukset, kesätyöntekijät
  • Pintakasvillisuuden biomassainventointi elokuussa Hyytiälän footprint-alueella 60 näyteruutua (20 x 20 cm). 1 viikko kasvien keräyksen, erottelun ja kuivauksen kanssa. Coordination with ICOS protocols. (Liisa)
  • kesätyöntekijät
  • This year’s tree biomass sampling would be good to make also at the ICOS plots
REA(Radiation)-Tower
  • The tower will not be extended
  • Foundations must be repaired and guys checked
  • Minor disturbances to measurements
  • Single trees can be felled to keep radiation etc. sensors in clear horizon.
  • Tree to the south 2 m away from the top
  • Measurements clearly over canopy should be mounted to the mast or the measurement tower
  • in practise everything can be moved except eddy
  • future of eddy will be decided later, O3 flux?
  • Need to have tower inside forest for fluxes, profiles, in-canopy chemistry etc.
Power
  • Uninterruptable power system
  • Preliminary plan made by contractor
  • There is consensus over the need
  • Board has contacted university administration
  • Centralised compressed air and vacuum production
  • Main hut area Mink to the cellar
  • dew point monitoring to compressed air
  • High temperature protection for containers
  • power cut
Meteorology
  • Järvenpää radar to Hyytiälä late Feb- early Mar (postponed to May-June?) 2015. It is a sea container with a 4.5m antenna on top. Placed to the old ARM site close to the A-house. Help needed from the station personell.
  • Move the precipitation measurements out from the old (short) FMI container
  • The comparison between the temperature measurements 67.2, 50.4 and 33.6 m is not good. 50.4m measurement seems to be OK. 8.4m measurement has most likely blower problem.
  • Eki will check but also Germans have problems so no point putting too much effort
  • SMEAR staff checks 8.4 m blower asap
  • Thies wind 67.2m is broken
  • 3D Metek will be installed as replacement
  • Tower T and RH is missing
  • new instruments by 30 April
  • New data connection box needed (serial/ethernet server, power etc.)
  • Delta Sunshine Sensor will also be connected to this
Gas
  • PTR-TOF spring-summer with FMI (Heidi Hellen)
  • Diagnostics signals to new Nokeval
  • TEI 146i calibrator excess flow sensor should be bought and installed
  • H2O monitor for the H20 generator and dew point sensor installation
  • Horiba mast CO offset in the analog signal shuldbe studied.
  • Calibration off in the pressure difference sensors in mast and cuvette lines
  • LI820 removal from the setup
  • NO and NO2 instruments to new tower cottage. Short sampling lines. One instrument from cuvette setup and one specific instrument coming in Feb 2015. Needs gases and clean air. Pressure regulators (N2, Air) to the new tower cottage.
  • CI-APITOF continues in the new tower cottage. Scroll to the pump room with UPS.
  • Does someone use the measurements above 67 m from the old Li-Cor profile?
  • The old profile could be replaced with a completely new sampling system from the bottom of the mast up to 33.6 m, with couple of new sampling levels for example 1 m and 2 m height? Is there room for this (ICOS EC storage protocol)?
  • New extended REA tower could also accommodate this
Radiation
  • SpecNet NDVI and PRI sensor installation and monthly cross-calibration maintenance for at least one year. Measurements starting 2015 or 2016 spring. Location to be decided (Albert Porcar) See separate document.
  • Location in the tall tower fully OK to decagon people
  • PRI & NDVI, 1 sensor up, 1 sensor down nadir, another off-nadir = 6 sensors
  • boom etc. special arrangements for installation? How far from the tower horizontally? Decided in the next few days. Need to be easily dismantled for calibration
  • Approx. Monthly calibration on the top of the tower. Jon, Pasi K take care of those. Or Albert
  • Decagon datalogger(s)
  • SDI-12 specs needed to connect to our system. Heikki et al. Direct connection with Decagon. Converters exist.
  • Installation first week March
  • The Decagon campaign will continue until at least next winter. We might keep the sensors or perhaps move to Värriö (calibration?)
  • OO spectrometer also at some point to the tall tower
  • Skye PRI sensors should be back in February 2015. Installation by mid-March next to the Skye-NDVI (Albert Porcar)
  • PRI back to the mast asap (early March)
  • Interest to move Skye NDVI also to the tower
  • The Monitoring-PAM remains in the old phototower where trees can be more easily accessed. Regular maintenance check, data download of the Monitoring PAM has been discontinued during the last years and this can be seen in the data (longer gaps due to snow during winter). If possible, it would be good if the weekly visual check/sensor cleaning could be re-established.
  • Data flow will be fixed.
  • SMEAR staff can also do very quick visual data check
  • Albert provides some documentation etc.
  • The data is an international precedent and there are a number of papers on the making with it… (Albert Porcar)
  • PRITOVOC Campaig campaign does not involve input from SMEAR-II technical Staff. In practice, a Chinese PhD student from Barcelona will be staying in Hyytiälä for two months (mid March-Mid May) and conduct regular leaf-level sampling/measurements in the towers at SMEAR-II. She will be also doing measurements in the Institute. (Albert Porcar)
  • OO system should be working during the campaign, Caroline will send new laptop. Albert & Jon calibrate.
  • Reflected global sensor should be at 67 m for ICOS compatibility, consistency with net radiation and reflected PAR, and old time series. New sensor instead of moving the 125 sensor.
  • Hukseflux at some point (late summer 2015?).
  • New Sunshine Sensor for total & diffuse PAR should be installed.
  • Sensor waiting for installation. New data acquisition box. Deadline 30 April.
Flux
  • New O3 analyser FOS Sextant installation. Tower or mast? Old LOZ has not been in use.
  • Monthly filter replacement must be considered when placing the instrument
  • Mast!
  • COS soil chamber(s) from Open University (UK)/UCLA (USA), and our COS Aerodyne to be installed with them; construction so that Aerodyne is switched to measure air concentration or EC flux then and then. Expected time late June (Helmi)
  • Subcanopy EC verification. It seems to produce mostly noise. Should we continue or change the site…
  • EC system stopped due malfunction with data logging
  • New setup needed – if needed – Värriösubcanopy based portable setup
  • While waiting for responsible researchers' decision the old setup can be dismantled.
  • Tower Li-Cor waiting for change, could SMEAR staff do it instead of Sigrid travelling to Hyde for 1 hour job?
  • Joo.
Photo (Anni Vanhatalo, Juho Aalto)
  • New photo tower in use since spring 2014. In old tower one cuvette still in use.

  • PTR-MS will measure from cuvette and mast as before
  • New stem cuvette for exchange and water soluble compounds under design
  • Topi
  • Lite cuvette system under design
  • In-house design, possible manufacturing of mechanical parts by Topi
  • NO and NOx were taken out (and will stay out) from the cuvette system. One in us in new tower cottage and one spare.
  • New O3 analyser available for the cuvette. Should be simple to install.
  • Old tower can be taken partly down, but it is needed during summer 2015 by Mari METAFOR (setm CH4 and N2O).
  • planning will be started for all enclosure upgrades (Anni: dynamic stem enclosure; Pasi/Juho/Jaana: kevytkyvettisysteemi; Mari/Jukka/Liisa: soil enclosures [for CH4, N2O, CO2]); potentially Topi's workshop could be involved, Heikki?
Total revision of the old cuvette system control software and electronics will be planned. Technical details will be figured out once ALL responsible researchers have made their requirements clear (gases, chamber type, number of lines, measuring frequency and closure time etc.)
  • online GC-MS for enclosure and air VOC concentration measurements. Planning should be started.
  • The status of LGR measurements (broken connectors, clock setting)
  • nykyisessä kyvettilinjastossa kiinni olevan LGR CO/N2O laserin datavirran järjestäminen,
  • Eki will sort this out
  • Juho will collect the data and save it to Timo

Help from summer worker will be needed occasionally.

Miniritsotronit (Heljä-Sisko)
  • Miniritsotroneilla määritetään hienojuurten kasvudynamiikkaa SMEARin männikössä. Kolmen vuoden aineisto 2012-2014 on valmis ja analysoitu, laskenta talvella 2015.
  • Kuvaamme SMEAR-männikön miniritsotroneja yhtenä päivänä kuukaudessa touko-lokakuussa myös 2015, liittyen 2012 perustamaamme kasvupaikkagradienttiin Hyden ympäristössä, jossa SMEAR-männikkö on mukana. Emme tarvitse mittauksissa apua.
  • Rahoitus työhön tulee Suomen Akatemian projektistani. Suunnitteilla on myös aloittaa kasvupaikkagradientilla tarkempi juurten kasvun fenologian seuranta maanalaisen kasvukauden alussa ja lopussa viikoittain samoista putkista (1 pv per viikko touko-kesäkuu ja lokakuu) esikokeena jätetylle NSF-hakemukselle. Mittaaja on vielä auki, voisikohan touko-kesäkuun mittaukset tehdä joku SMEAR-kesätyöntekijä?

ICOS

ATM/meteo
  • Päävirtauslinjoihin lisätään filtterit ennen hiljalleen tukkeutuvia virtausmittareita (1kpl jo paikallaan)
  • new Rotronic at 33.6 m (Ecosystem)
  • Extra logging capacity might be needed
  • Atmospheric pressure measurements are not ICOS (AS) compatible
  • Risto will order ICOS compatible pressure sensor
  • Should be installed to measure pressure outdoors, not inside the cabin (door closed => pressure changes etc.)
  • In principle, Eki is strongly against
  • Generally the data logging frequency should be increased (of ICOS related parameters)
  • Recommendations 0.1 Hz to 0.03 Hz
  • Kolari will collect the upgrade list after protocols are final
  • Could the logging of the “ICOS diagnostics” (flows etc. including p) be moved to Picarro’s integrated computer ==> 1 Nokeval needed
  • Should be tested
  • More markings in log books (for instance about installations with instrument serial numbers, calibrations etc.)
  • e.g. ICOS concentration data transfer to France hasn’t happened yet since the serial numbers of meteorological instruments are not known
  • Rotronics could be called according to the Physics inventory number
  • ventilation needed in the basement for gas bottles; maybe also a fan to mix air and minimize the vertical T gradient, so that the bottles don’t need to be horizontally
  • Extra fan to the cellar
  • in principle the whole calibration setup (cylinders, regulators, sampling lines) should be in the same temperature as the instrument which is calibrated
  • According to test made by Keronen the gas flow from present cal. system is in the same temperature as the ambient sample air flow
  • The requirements for 0…33.6 m CO2/H2O-profile measurements (storage change flux) are still open
  • Picarro measures at 16, 67 and 125 m heights for ICOS ATC needs
  • Independent system or integrated to the old profile measurements (causes need for rebuild)
EC
  • Protokollan mukainen eddy asennettu 33 m:n
  • Feedback?
  • ICOS INWIRE-instrumenttitesti
  • Katso Siikaneva1
  • Kasvupannat
  • Vanhat laitteet rikki
  • Metlalla hyviä kokemuksia käyttämistään pannoista
  • Speksit Teemulla

Ecosystem

  • 4 soil/biomass plots, 50-70 m distance from the mast. The pits in the catchment area are not used for ICOS-measurements, at least not as a primary source of data
  • final planning should be done during 2015 (=”koealojenpyykitys”, exact locations of instruments in the field, power & data logging etc. etc.)
  • however implementation mostly during 2016
  • Nothing done yet
  • INWIRE tests still ongoing
  • Some protocols still unfinished
  • soil T and humidity from approx. 5 depths up to 1 m deep if possible, groundwater height if needed (mostly in SW direction)
  • soil heat flux
  • subcanopy PAR, measurements must be synched with the above canopy PAR!
  • Apogees should be replaced with better sensors (Licor?)
  • Relates to the biomass plots
  • litter collectors and litter plots
  • automatic dendrometers
  • etc.
  • there’s going to be quite a lot of traffic at the plots due to vegetation and soil sampling, some boardwalks are probably needed
  • inevitably there’s going to be quite a lot of wires going around, although some things can be done wireless
  • Soil chambers
  • In the beginning measurements are done with “Toheli”, n units needed
  • For the auxiliary data measured in parallel (T, humidity,?) no big changes needed in data collection?
  • Measurements should be done further away from the catchment area
  • In the future larger chambers should be used (make/order larger ones when there’s need for new ones, coordinate with the chamber revision)
  • This year’s biomass sampling would be good to make also at the ICOS plots

Aerosols (Pasi Aalto, Jonathan Duplissy)
