Ian Woodhead Receives Santiago Canyon College’s Faculty Excellence Award

Orange, CA—Ian Woodhead of Huntington Beach is Santiago Canyon College’s 2007 Faculty Excellence Award winner. This is the highest honor bestowed by colleagues upon a faculty member. Woodhead’s name will be added to a perpetual plaque along with previous winners, and he also receives a $2,500 prize.

As the head coach of the Santiago Canyon College women’s soccer team, Woodhead has guided the Hawks to three consecutive Orange Empire Conference (OEC) Championships and led the team to its first-ever California Community College Women’s Soccer State Championship in 2006. Woodhead was also named the OEC Coach of the Year in 2002, 2004 and 2005.

In addition to success on the playing field, Woodhead also emphasizes academic excellence for players. During the 2005-06 academic season, the SCC women’s soccer team was selected as a Commission on Athletics Scholar Team Recipient as the team finished with an overall grade point average of 3.2.

“My philosophy is to help students be successful in life by establishing a strong work ethic that enables them to always do their best, no matter what the circumstances,” said Woodhead.

Woodhead holds a bachelor’s degree from Portsmouth Polytechnic in England and a master’s degree from Azusa Pacific University.

Nomination criteria for the Faculty Excellence Award include service to the college, commitment to student success, curriculum development and academic leadership. Nominations are by students and faculty, and final selection is determined by faculty vote.

SCC is a public community college of the Rancho Santiago Community Colleges District, serving the residents of Anaheim Hills, Irvine, Orange, Tustin and Villa Park. The college provides education for academic transfer and careers, courses for personal and professional development, and customized training for business and industry.
