Chemistry 5390

Fall 2016

Lecture: TTH 8:00 – 9:20, ENV 115

Instructor: Dr. Teresa D. Golden

Office hours: 11:00 - 11:30 am MW, 3:00 – 4:00 pm M, CHEM 207B, 565-2888,

Grading: Exams, quizzes, homework, and research paper and presentation will each be assigned a total point value. The student’s final grade will be: (the total number of points received/total number of points possible) x 100.

Exams: There will be 2-3 exams, several quizzes, homework, and a final exam. Dates for each exam will be announced in class.

The final will be Tuesday, December 13th, 8:00 - 10:00 a.m.

Research

Presentation: See attached sheets for more information.

Additional Information:

(a) According to University policy, the grade of I (incomplete) cannot be given as a substitute for a failing grade in a course.

(b) Statement of ADA Compliance: The chemistry department cooperates with the Office of Disability Accommodations to make reasonable accommodations for qualified students with disabilities. If applicable, please present your request along with an official written verification from the ODA before the end of the first week of classes.

Topics: Chromatography Theory; Gas Chromatography (Instrumentation, Theory and Applications); High Performance Liquid Chromatography (Instrumentation, Modes of Separation, and Applications); Ion Chromatography (Theory, Instrumentation, and Applications); Gel Permeation Chromatography (Theory, Instrumentation, and Applications); Super Critical Fluid Chromatography (Introduction, Instrumentation, Theory and Applications); Capillary Electrophoresis (Introduction, Instrumentation, Modes of Separation, and Applications); Mass Spectrometry (Theory, Instrumentation, Techniques, and Applications); Other various topics as time permits.

Research Paper/Presentation

Chemistry 5390

Fall 2016

A research paper and presentation will be required for the course. The topic must cover the latest advances in chromatography or can be related to the student’s research as long as there is a chromatography component. A white paper (2-4 pages) indicating the student's topic of choice (with reference list) must be submitted to me no later than September 27th.

Papers should include:

Title Page

Introduction (literature review, background, and frame of reference)

Experimental

Results and Discussion

Conclusions

References

(Note – if your topic is part of your graduate research – the paper can be in the format of a journal articles you are submitting or thesis/dissertation chapter)

A research presentation will be required in class.

Presentation should include:

Title

Introduction and Instrumentation

Problem Statement/Assessment of Need

How the advancement solves this problem/need

Conclusions

References

Contact Dr. Golden for sign-up of presentation date.

The grade will be based on the research idea, presentation style, and scope of literature review.

The following are good starting places to find presentation ideas:

American Chemical Society Journals, search Analytical Chemistry and

Journals of Chromatography on the library search sites.

Instrument company websites: i.e. Agilent, Thermo Scientific, Shimadzu, etc.
