After graduating from Loughborough University, Leicestershire, in 1994 with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Garry joined Posford Duvivier (now Royal Haskonning)for six years (adding to a previous four years of summer and sandwich course undergraduate employment). During this time Garry worked at their Newcastle and Peterborough offices and was involved in structural building design, shipyard and port structures, coastal defence and rivers edge engineering projects located both in the UK and overseas. While at Posford Duvivier Garry’spaper for the design of large diameter single pile mooring and berthing dolphins won the ICE Russell Allin prize.
This period included a 16th month secondment to Japanese contractor, Kajima, for a donor funded bridge construction programme, based in Han Noi, Vietnam. Garry worked for the principal contractor as construction manager for fourseparate bridge construction sites in northern Vietnam. Working for Posford Duvivier also included postings to Kazakhstan during the reconstruction of Aktau Port and Kuala Lumpur during the design of a phase of development for Port Klang.
Garry joined Mott Macdonald in 2000, initially in Newcastle and then Glasgow, working as design engineer and then project manager for design and construct commercial developments, water infrastructure projects and then latterly in major on-shore wind farm developments. This included a time seconded to a major wind farm development company, assisting them with construction procurement and stakeholder/planning engineering support.
In 2007Garry was seconded to Aurecon Australia (previously Connell Wagner)to act as design manager and package leader for projects in the booming resources sector. After fouryears Garry joined Aurecon in a permanent capacity, undertaking the role of civil discipline leader for the 300 strong resources unit in Brisbane.Whilst at Aurecon Garry extended his project management experience into heavy haul rail and bulk material port development projects. This experience led Garryto become a Key Client Manager for Aureconto a major railway client.
Garry became a student member of the Institution of Civil Engineers whilst at university and achieved Chartered Membership in 2001. He has acted as Delegated Engineer to both graduate engineers and peers applying through the Career Appraisal route. He has also acted as mentor, formally and informally, to a number of junior engineers for many years. Currently based in Queensland Australia, Garry maintains his professional status by being a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland. Having spent the previous seven years assisting aspiring ICE members meet their training obligations on an informal basis he has now committed to assisting the ICE Trans-Tasman group meet its targets and objectives to secure the future of the Institution.
