Men’s Soccer: Hawks Lose, 3-1, to Riverside in home finale;
Inouye’s first goal of the season gives SCC a 1-0 halftime lead before RCC erupts for three.
Posting a half-time lead at home for the first time in three weeks, only to see it slip away, the Santiago Canyon College (SCC) men’s soccer team lost, 3-1, to the Riverside Community College Tigers (RCC) Friday afternoon (Nov. 5) in an Orange Empire Conference (OEC) game at SCC Soccer Field in Orange.
After opening the season with a 5-0 non-conference home win over the San Bernardino Valley College Wolverines (Sep. 3), the Hawks were winless in their final 10 home games, going 0-6-4 along the way. SCC led, 1-0, at halftime against Cypress College on Oct. 22.
Freshman midfielder Benjamin Inouye (Hilo, HI H.S.) garnered his first goal of the season when the Hawks capitalized on a 3-on-1 break. Freshman midfielder Manuel Rivera (Hillview H.S.) gathered the ball into the offensive half of the field and then looped it over to the left side of the goal about five yards away to freshman forward Vince Case (El Dorado H.S.) before Case slid it back to the middle of the 18-yard box where Inouye sent rolling shot from five yards away past RCC freshman goalkeeper Gabriel Esqueda (Rancho Verde H.S.) in the 17th minute.
Ten minutes later, both SCC sophomore midfielder Fernando Tinajero (Servite H.S.) and RCC freshman defender Joey Pulido (El Camino Real H.S.) were red-carded and both teams played a man short for the final 63 minutes.
SCC saw its 1-0 halftime lead disappear quickly when RCC took the opening kickoff of the second half and tied the game in the 46th minute when sophomore midfielder Joel Torres (Arlington H.S.) notched his fourth goal of the season (and eventually his first of two in the game) off a feed from sophomore forward Giovanni Melloni (Westminster H.S.).
Three minutes later, RCC (8-6-3, 5-6-2 in OEC) was whistled for a foul in the 18-yard box when SCC freshman midfielder Garrett Smith (Edison H.S.) was pulled down from behind with his back to the goal. Case attempted the ensuing penalty kick which eluded Esqueda, but caromed off the left goalpost and kept the game tied at 1-1.
In the 59th minute, Torres scored again when he let loose with a blast from 15 yards after being on the receiving end of a through ball from freshman forward Maxwel Ebegbune (Nigeria).
Melloni added an insurance goal – his team-leading ninth tally of the season – in the 71st minute when a high-bouncing ball eluded SCC sophomore goalkeeper John Timoti (Edison H.S.). Torres gained the assist.
Timoti played all 90 minutes, faced 14 shots, allowed all three goals and made six saves for SCC (2-12-4, 1-9-3 in OEC). Esqueda also went the distance, faced 26 shots, allowed one goal and made six saves.
If there is any bright spot on the season, at least the 2004 edition of Hawks men’s soccer is not the worst in its brief five-season history. The 2001 squad was 2-16-1 overall and 1-12-1 in OEC action.
“In all my 30 years of coaching, I’ve never had a season like this,” said SCC third-year head men’s soccer coach Dave McLeish.
Both teams conclude OEC action on Tuesday, Nov. 9. SCC will visit the Cypress College Chargers in a 3 p.m. kickoff after RCC hosts the Golden West College Rustlers in a 1 p.m. start.
