8th Grade Coordinate Algebra Syllabus

Course Description:

This year, we will continue to implement The Georgia Department of Education (GADOE) Common Core Mathematics Standards. The 8th Grade Coordinate Algebra course follows the GADOE Coordinate Algebra Curriculum Map and Frameworks. Parents may access these documents and information at www.georgiastandards.org/CommonCore. This is a high school level course for which they will earn one high school credit during their 8th grade year. Please remember, there is no longer an option to re-take the course in high school. The grade earned in this course will count toward graduation requirements and be calculated in their GPA for high school.

Since this is an accelerated course it will be challenging, and students should be prepared to put forth the extra time and effort to meet the objectives for this course. Students will be assigned a workbook for this course. They may purchase the workbook for a replacement cost of $20, and then they may write in the workbook and use it to take notes. If you choose not to purchase the workbook, they will still be given one, but they may not write in the book and must return it at the end of the year.

The final exam for this course is the GADOE End of Course Test for Coordinate Algebra and counts as 20% of the final grade per state requirements.

Since this is an honor’s level course, there will be no extra credit assignments and no dropped test grades. When a student doesn’t master a standard as exhibited on a test, a re-test may be available. The two test scores will be averaged for a final test grade resulting no higher than 80.

Per the Floyd County Gifted Schools Make-Up Policy, if a student is absent, it is his/her responsibility to get the absentee work from each teacher. If the absence is excused, the student has three school days from the date of his/her return to complete and turn in the work. Any tests missed will be rescheduled with the teacher.

This year I will be using various technology to help keep parents and students aware of classroom assignments and activities. I now have a webpage. You may access it by going to www.floydboe.net, choosing Coosa Middle School from the drop-down menu in the upper left, choosing Honors, and then finding my name in the list. You may also acccess it by using the following address and then bookmarking the site on your computer, phone or tablet.

In addition to to the website, I will be using text messages for those students and parents who wish to receive reminders from me on their phone. Attached to this syllabus are directions regarding how to enroll in the text message service.

I look forward to a great year of challenging and enriching mathematics study! Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns by email at or call 706-236-1856. My planning time is from 8:05-9:45 each day.

Thank you for the opportunity to teach your students!
