GETTING INTO THE GUINNESS BOOK OF WORLD RECORDS
Dan Orchard is not the fastest runner in the world. He’s not a great artist or a rock star. But Dan does have his own Guinness World Record. Dan is the fastest milkshake drinker in the world. He can drink a whole milkshake through a straw* in only ten seconds. You can read all about this record and many others in the Guinness Book of World Records.
For the last fifty years, the Guinness Book of World Records has collected the strangest records. Matthew McGrory is famous because he has the biggest feet. Charlotte Lee is in the Guinness Book of World Records because she has the largest collection of rubber ducks in the world – 1,439 ducks!
You are probably thinking “Who cares?”. Many people care. Millions of people buy the Guinness Book of World Records every year and over 60,000 people try to get into the book. It’s not so easy. Guinness does not take activities that are boring or too dangerous. For example, they didn’t put in the man who wore the same pair of socks for the longest time.
Some people are good at finding ways to get into the book. Ashrita Furman is one of them. Ashrita has set about 100 records! He has done some amazing things like somersaulting* for 29 kilometers and standing on a big ball for over three hours and 30 minutes. Ashrita tells kids who want to get into the book, “Pick something you love. You’re going to have to spend a lot of time practicing.”
