Course Title: Concert Band

Brief Course Description: Concert Band is a musical performance/lecture course that concentrates on performing traditional and advanced concert band music, pep tunes, and individual solos. After school rehearsals, performances, and field trips are required in addition to participation in the school’s pep ensemble. This course is for wind players who desire being in the performance ensembles on campus. (Woodwind and Brass players)

The following percentage scale will determine letter grades:

90–100% à A

80–89% à B

65–79% à C

55–64% à D

0–54% à F

1. COURSE GRADE

a.  Performance Participation à 40% grade

b.  Practice Logs à 20% grade

c.  Attendance at Rehearsals à 20% grade

d.  Dot Book à 10% grade

e.  Class Participation à 10% grade

2. PERFORMANCES

a.  There will be five (5) field tournaments (or competitions), performances at ‘Home’ football games, parades, and a Christmas Concert.

b.  Attendance at all performances is mandatory.

c.  An unexcused absence from a performance will result in the lowering of the class grade by one full grade (ie. A to B).

3. PRACTICE LOGS

a.  Practice Logs are intended to help each student track his progress over the course of each semester.

b.  These logs will be submitted to Mr. Curci on the 1st school day of each month for grading, and will be returned the following day.

c.  Your practice log may be a notepad, spiral notebook, or a 3-ring binder.

d.  In order to receive full credit, the practice log must include the date the student practiced, how long he practiced, his goals for that practice session, whether or not his goal was met, and a parent/guardian signature (one for each month).

e.  A minimum of six (6) hours of practice is required each month (less than 15 min. per day).

4. REHEARSALS

a.  There will be three (3) weekly rehearsals after school: Mondays (6-8:30pm), Wednesdays (5-8pm), and Thursdays (6-8:30pm).

b.  As each member of the ensemble has a very specific role and contribution, attendance at all rehearsals is mandatory.

c.  Rehearsal Attendance Policy:

i.  First absence: Excused (with a note/email from a parent)

ii.  Second absence: Mandatory meeting with Mr. Curci and parents

iii.  Third absence: Lowering of class grade by one full grade (ie. A to B) and another meeting

iv.  Fourth absence: Dropped from the program and will receive an F for the semester. Your son will not be allowed to pull out of the class to avoid this grade.

5. DOT BOOKS

a.  All students are required to have a 3”x5” spiral-bound index card notebook, along with a pencil and a lanyard/string.

b.  All visual notes and “dots” are to be written down within this book and kept throughout the season. The dot book will be brought to every rehearsal and used as a visual resource.

c.  The completed dot book will be submitted for grading at the conclusion of the competitive season (late November).
