Deputy Head Teacher Job Description

Role of the Deputy Head Teacher

To support the Head Teacher in providing effective, dynamic and inspirational leadership to ensure that every child is able to fulfil their potential as academically able good citizens.

The post holder, in addition to the requirements of possible teaching commitments, will be required to undertake the following areas of responsibility and key tasks:

Proving Senior Leadership

  • Support the Head Teacher in managing and leading the school; deputising for the Head Teacher as appropriate.
  • Support the vision, ethos, core values and policies of the school and promote high levels of achievement.
  • Support the creation and implementation of the school improvement plan within the national and local context, and take delegated responsibility for specific aspects of it, as agreed with the Head Teacher
  • Have an overview of the school, including ensuring necessary resources to support the school in delivering the agreed curriculum.
  • Be committed to Initial Teacher Training, working closely with local providers to mentor students, offering the best experiences whilst on practice.
  • Lead staff in the achievement of the priorities and targets as agreed with the Head Teacher having been set by the Board of Governors. Providing support and guidance in implementing schemes of work.
  • Ensure the effectiveness of and adherence to agreed school policies.
  • With the Head Teacher, lead the self-evaluation cycle by developing and organising varied, stimulating and relevant staff meetings and training days throughout the year.
  • Actively contribute to the development of all aspects of school life to ensure innovation; forward thinking and creativity remain at the heart of the school’s purpose.
  • Ensure that parents/carers are well informed about the school curriculum, its targets, children’s attainment and their part in the process of improvement.
  • Enable the views of both parents/carers and children to be heard and considered.
  • Support the Head Teacher in the implementation of the school’s Pay and Reward and Appraising Teacher Performance policies
  • Promote opportunities for networking with other schools, including with the Head Teacher taking a senior role in the Ashford Teaching Alliance.
  • In partnership with the Head Teacher, act as overall curriculum co-ordinator.
  • In close liaison with subject leaders, update, refine and develop as appropriate, the school’s curriculum planning systems.
  • Monitor curriculum development plans for priorities, costings and links with the school development plan.

B. Assessment, recording and reporting to;

  • Maintain plans and evaluations of lessons undertaken and records of students’ work.
  • Mark, monitor and return work within a reasonable and agreed time span providing constructive oral and written feedback and clear targets for future learning as appropriate, in line with assessment and marking policies.
  • Carry out assessment programmes (e.g. reports) in line with school policy.
  • Maintain and monitor pupil progress data, using these records to ensure support and challenge.
  • Attend consultation evenings, and liaise with parents as appropriate, to ensure they stay informed as to the progress of their child.
  • Be familiar with the Code of Practice for identification and assessment of Special Educational Needs and keep appropriate records on Individual Education Plans for students.

C. Support the Headteacher in Leading and developing staff :

  • Be an excellent role model in all aspects of professional life.
  • Support the Head Teacher in developing positive working relationships with and between all staff and provide and sustain motivation
  • Provide model demonstration lessons to other staff that exemplify high standards of teaching and support the Head Teacher in monitoring the quality of teaching and learning by undertaking lesson observations, monitoring plans and scrutiny of children’s work and providing feedback, targets, advice and support
  • Lead groups of staff in developmental activities, delegate appropriately and evaluate outcomes.
  • Form positive relationships with children while maintaining excellent behaviour, classroom and whole school management.
  • Ensure that a high standard of physical and emotional care for all children is maintained and where necessary, to act as liaison with all external support agencies.
  • Ensure that a high standard of education is maintained at all times for all children and that appropriate educational intervention programmes are implemented and kept under review.
  • Co-ordinate and oversee performance management for all staff and use the process to develop personal and professional effectiveness.
  • Through production of a CPD plan, arrange programmes of training for staff as necessary and provide particular support to newly qualified teachers and teachers new to the school.
  • Lead student teacher training when practices are held at Lady Joanna Thornhill Primary School.
  • Ensure that all staff work within the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act.
  • Ensure effective deployment of all staff to maximise benefits for all children both in and out of the classroom environment.
  • Provide opportunities to all staff for guidance and counselling and foster good relationships within the school, including monitoring the Staff Handbook.
  • Provide when necessary, advice and support to parents about their child’s development and needs.
  • Actively develop and maintain positive relationships with parents, the local community, governors and elected representatives.
  • Aid the monitoring and reporting of achievement to assist teachers and inform governors of the target setting process.
  • As necessary, support, prepare and complete the appropriate application of awards and funding that both recognise the school’s achievements and help sustain further development.
  • Mentor/ support staff so they feel confident in taking a role in our teaching school alliance.

D. Effective Deployment of Staff and Resources to:

  • Support the Head Teacher in the appointment, deployment and development of staff to make the most effective use of their skills, expertise and experience and to ensure that all staff have a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities.
  • Support the Head Teacher in the management and organisation of relevant groupings of children to ensure effective teaching and learning takes place and that all children’s personal development needs are met.
  • Support the Head Teacher to develop priorities for expenditure and monitoring the effectiveness of spending and usage of resources with a view to achieving value for money.
  • Allocate duties, timetables and tasks to staff, both teaching and non-teaching.

E. PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS

  • Support the aims of the school to promote a “learning community".
  • Treat all members of the community, colleagues and students, with respect and consideration.
  • Treat all students fairly, consistently and without prejudice.
  • Set a good example to students in terms of appropriate dress, standards of punctuality and attendance.
  • Promote the aims of the school by attendance at and participation in events such as open evenings and performances.
  • Take responsibility for their own professional development and participate in staff training when provided.
  • Reflect on their own practice as well as the practices of the school with aim of improving all that we do.
  • Read and adhere to the policies of the school as expressed in the School Improvement Plan, the staff handbook, and the staff policy file.
  • Participate in the management of school by attending various team and staff meetings.
  • To develop links with governors, LEA, neighbouring schools and any outside agencies linked to the school.
  • Undertake professional duties that may be reasonably assigned to them by the Head Teacher.
  • Ensure that all deadlines are met as published on the school calendar.
  • Be proactive and take responsibility for matters relating to health and safety

F. General to:

  • Provide effective professional challenge and support to the Head Teacher.
  • Provide information and advice (in a variety of formats) to the Head Teacher, governing body, officers and inspectors, and support proper accountability processes throughout the school.
  • Promote equal opportunities within the school and to seek to ensure the implementation of the school’s equal opportunities policy.

G. Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Take on specific tasks related to the day-to-day administration and organisation of the school.
  • To be named as ‘Key Holder’ for the school premises.
  • Be on a rota of named people for out of school hours call out in an emergency.
  • Be an authorised signatory for the school bank accounts.
  • Take on any additional responsibilities which may be, from time to time, determined by the Head Teacher

This appointment is subject to the current conditions of employment of deputy head teachers contained in the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document, the Education Act 1997, the required standards for Qualified Teacher Status, other current educational legislation and the school’s articles of government.
