Weekly Funding Opportunity Announcement – 8.11.2015

CongratulationstoHeather Dawson and Danielle Potts from the Biology department for their recent publications, “Feasibility of Passive Integrated Transponder Technology to Study In Situ Movements of Larval Sea Lamprey” in the Journal of Fish and Wildlife Management and “Validation of a relationship between statolith size and age of larval Great Lakes sea lamprey (petomyzon marinus)” in Environmental Biology of Fishes.

The articles resulted from research performed with the support of Dr. Dawson’s Research and Creative Activity grant.

Dr. Van Allen is happy to meet with faculty individually or in groups and teams in consulting with them on their research agendas and funding opportunities. He will also consult on individual career development and/or interdisciplinary collaborations of research. Please contact him for an appointment or meeting at phone extension 6-6842 or email address .

All Funds for FY2016 International Travel Have Been Awarded

The Office of Research is no longer accepting applications for International Travel grants. All funds have been awarded for the year.2015-2016 Student Research Conferences

During the upcoming academic year, there will be two opportunities for students to present their research. Please encourage your student researchersto sharethe results of their hard work at one or both of these conferences. Students can submit a paper, a research poster, or both.

On November 13, 2015, we will host the Flint Student Research Symposium (FSRS), which will feature graduate and undergraduate students from UM-Flint and Kettering University. For more information and to register, please visit

Meeting of Minds (MOM) will be held on May 13, 2016, and features undergraduate students from UM-Flint, UM-Dearborn, Kettering, and Oakland University. Please watch future announcements for more information.

We’re looking forward to the first-time partnership with Kettering University, and are excited to welcome their student presenters. Both conferences are scheduled to be held at the Riverfront Center.

This is an opportunity to highlight student achievements, and recognize what can be accomplished with the help of faculty mentors. Please encourage your students to make this part of their academic experience.

Augment Your Research Team with Students from UROP

Faculty: you are invited to submit your research projects to the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP). UROP offers students an opportunity to earn paid experiences as research assistants on faculty-led projects. For many students, working closely with a faculty mentor represents one of the highlights of their academic career. At the same time, faculty can also benefit by having enthusiastic and engaged students working directly alongside them. Don’t miss out on this great opportunity!

For more information, please visit under the “Faculty” tab or contact Andre Louis at .

Register for Upcoming Workshop

The Office of Research, the Faculty Mentoring Program, and the UM-Flint School of Health Professions and Studies will host a proposal writing workshop during the upcoming Fall semester.

DOE Opens Opportunity to Spur Small Business Innovation

by Graeff, Frank J.

The Department of Energy (DOE)is ramping up to its next Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Phase I release with a series of webinars providing details on the specific focuses of this applied research opportunity. DOE is looking to solve specific research problems broadly sorted into four offices: Basic Energy Sciences; Nuclear Physics; Advanced Scientific Computing Research; and Biological and Environmental Research.
SBIR/STTR is a multi-agency initiative to encourage domestic small businesses to engage in Federal Research/Research and Development (R/R&D) that has the potential for commercialization. Eleven federal agencies, all with annual research budgets exceeding $100 million participate in the SBIR program. Although small for-profit businesses must be the primeapplicant, colleges and universities may partner on SBIR grants. STTR applications require a nonprofit or academic partner. Applicants who win Phase I awards, focused on broader research, are eligible to apply for Phase II and III awards, focusing on commercialization.
Webinars providing more detail into specific focus areas can be foundhere. A full list of topic areas can be foundhere(PDF), including topic specific contacts. Approximately $150,000 is available per award for the various topic areas. The full FOA will be released on August 17, 2015, and awebinardiscussing FOA specific information will be held on August 21, 2015. Required letters of intent are dueSeptember 8, 2015. The cycle will start anew with a separate release of new SBIR focus areas on November 2, 2015.More informationabout theDOE SBIR program is availablehere.
