Reporting to: Core Skills Coordinator
Aim
Under the general direction of the Core Skills Coordinator, plan, organize and deliver a range of classes to homeless and vulnerably housed adults, in order to improve confidence and competence in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
Circumstances
- 17.5 hours per week, worked over three consecutive days, Monday to Wednesday
- Deliver up to 10.5 hoursof learning activity delivering a range of ESOL courses to Crisis Skylight clients
- Some evening and weekend work may be required and time off in lieu will be given in accordance with Crisis TOIL policy
- Based in the Old Town with services delivered in partners’ facilities across Edinburgh.
- For those who do not have a PVG membership certificate dated within the past year a satisfactory Basic Disclosure from Disclosure Scotland is required for this role. (Existing members of Crisis staff will be advised on how this applies to them)
Salary
£12,068per annum (£24,137 FTE)– £26,714 FTE as of 01 July 2016

Principle Accountabilities
Recruitment and assessment
- Recruitand select learners for Crisis Skylight Edinburgh ESOL courses
- Undertake initial and formative assessment of learners and respond accordingly
- Create and administer initial and formative assessments which inform the development of training & learning plans that take into account individual needs, styles and interests
- Deliver a range of training and assessment activities
Teaching and learning support
- Teach and support ESOL learning in accordance with best practice for the client group
- Plan, reflect and review each learner’s programme on a regular basis
- Prepare and use good quality learning materials
- Prepare schemes of work and lesson plans in accordance with standard practice
- Establish and maintain standards of conduct with and for the learners
- Ensure all learning activity aids the progression of individuals and future development plans drawn up
- Adhere to Crisis policies when dealing with aggressive or challenging behaviour
- Support volunteers as required within sessions
Certification and quality assurance
- Assess, record and report on the development, progress and attainment against the standards set for the programme
- Make and keep appropriate assessment records
- Liaise as required with internal moderators and representatives of awarding bodies.
- Maintain and provide required records for accountability purposes
- Source and maintain accreditation procedures and associated paperwork
- Fulfil accreditation requirements and assess Crisis Skylight Edinburgh clients in line with SQA procedures
- Contribute to the development of Crisis Skylight Edinburgh quality assurance systems
- Compile and maintain member records in line with audit procedures maintaining member confidentiality at all times
- Ensure any safeguarding concerns are identified and reported in line with Crisis procedures
Contribution to the team and organisation
- Develop and share teaching and learning materials with the team
- Participate in professional development activities
- Participate in the continual improvement of resources, learning environments and delivery of effective teaching methods and styles
- Promote well-being and development of the organisation internally and externally
- Preserve good professional relationships with other individuals and agencies
- Develop and share teaching and learning materials with the team and with other Skylight centres
- Identify learners that would benefit from one to one support from a Work and Learning or Progression Coach
General Accountabilities
- Actively encourage and support member involvement within Crisis
- Develop and maintain an understanding of Crisis’ work and the needs and circumstances of homeless people
- Comply with Crisis policies and procedures, including Health and Safety policies, for which all employees owe a duty of care both to themselves and others, in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act
- Carry out any other duties that may reasonably be required in the light of the main purpose of the job
Person Specification
Essential
- The applicant must hold a CELTA/Cert TESOL qualification at SCQF level 7/8
- The applicant must have demonstrable experience in delivering and assessing SQA ESOL qualifications from SCQF level 2 – level 4
- Experience of delivering ESOL accredited courses to a wide range of levels in an adult education setting
- Able to communicate effectively with individuals and groups using a variety of media
- Experience in the preparation, planning and marking of assessments and thetracking and monitoring of individuals’ progress
- Ability to keep accurate and up to date records, sharing information as and when appropriate
- Proven organisational skills including an ability to prioritise, be self motivated and have good time-management skills
- Proven experience of engaging vulnerable, disengaged or hard to reach adults in relevant educational and training programmes
- A capacity to work on your own and as part of a team with a willingness to reflect upon and develop ones own practice
- A passion for innovative learning, creativity and engaging people in lifelong learning and skills
- A knowledge of and ability to comply with safeguarding procedures
- Commitment to Crisis’ purpose and values including equality and social inclusion
Desirable
- Diploma in TESOL or TQFE
- Ability to speak a second European/Eastern European language
