INDIVIDUAL INSTRUCTOR HANDOUT – TPA SERIES
Fall 2006
Course Content:
These labs are designed to provide you with academic credit for participation in the operation of a theatrical facility.
Since this laboratory is an “activity course” there will be no books, homework, or examinations. Instead, you will be required to carry out whatever theatrical duties are assigned to you; however, the manner in which you carry out your duties will ultimately determine your final grade. In other words, both your attitude and the quality of your work are extremely important.
As we proceed through the semester, there will be plenty of hard, dirty work to be done in the theatre, but there will also be a good deal of clean, easy, finesse work as well. The general plan of action will be as follows:
- Clean the theatre, top to bottom
- Make an inventory of all equipment
- Repair or replace equipment as needed
- Upgrade the scene shop and dressing rooms
- Build and strike the current production
- Get acquainted with the tools and supplies of the shop as well as the rigging on the stage
- Hang and focus lighting instruments
- Learn design and construction principles
- Serve on crews to implement the following technical areas: sets, props, costumes, make-up, lights, sound and business
- Serve as assistants when outside groups perform in our space
- Keep a clean and organized costume shop in the ArtsCenter
TECH CLASSES (SEE THEATRE CALENDAR)
Crew members should expect toA course participation in the technical facets of a theatre production. Credit may be received for work in the areas of lighting, set construction, costuming, publicity, and makeup work outside of specified class times and all members should expect to be involved with the final rehearsals, tech rehearsals, and performances of the production.
GRADING AND COURSE EVALUATION
Grades are earned as a result of the diligence of your own efforts in class and for the quality and quantity of work you accomplish on various production assignments. Class and outside call absences have a detrimental effect on your grade. Therefore, any work you do and the manner of its performance is specifically noted by some member of the staff of a show and/or facility in the Fine Arts Department.
THERE IS NO MORE IMPORTANT RULE OF PROFESSIONALISM IN THE THEATRE THAN TO BE ON TIME AND PREPARED.
Since it takes all members of a theatrical family/troupe to make a production work, it must be stated that there are no jobs which are unnecessary. Additionally, it is virtually impossible to grade art and since our success and your success depends upon attendance, attitude, co-operation, responsibility, dependability, following through and completing work, as well as the quality of work, it is expected that in order to receive an “A” you will do the following:
- Complete all classes and outside calls of work towards mounting the current production and operating Chipola theatre. Hours are documented by attendance.
- Attend and work all Artist Series Events.
- Participate in the strike/clean up phases of the semester.
- Work as part of the running crew for the show (even if your are a cast member).
5. Never arrive late, not even 1 minute.
* Production Staff Meetings count as 1 hour each week that it is held. The time will be announced.
The Chipola Theatre Handbook details expectations and crew descriptions as well as how the program operates. Handbook can be found at

ATTENDANCE AND TARDINESS POLICY
Regular attendance is expected of all students. Each student is accountable to the instructor for all class absences. There are three acceptable excuses for absences: (1) severe illness, (2) death in the immediate family, and (3) official college activity (approved by Student Services). Any questionable excuse shall be verified by the office of Student Services when requested by the instructor.
When any absence occurs, it is the responsibility of the student to contact the instructor as soon as possible and make arrangements about making up work. Work must be made up within one week following the absence or within the time specified by the instructor in case of extended absence. A tenpoint penalty is assessed for late work. Except as noted above, makeup work will not be permitted after the oneweek deadline, and the instructor will record a grade of “0” for each assignment not submitted.
Tardiness to class is disruptive to learning and is unacceptable. If the student is tardy, the student shall see his/her instructor at the end of the class period, and the instructor will determine if the tardiness is excusable. Excessive tardiness may be counted as absences at the discretion of the instructor.
WITHDRAWAL POLICY
A student may withdraw from a course prior to the deadline for withdrawing which is listed in the college catalog and the college class schedule. A student who has missed too many classes or who is making unsatisfactory progress in the course can withdraw and receive a “W” mark for the course. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain the necessary request form from the Registrar’s Office for withdrawing from a class, to obtain signatures for completing it, and to turn it in to the Registrar’s Office before the deadline. It is advisable to check later to ensure that the withdrawal has been processed.
NOTE: In 1997, the Florida Legislature passed House Bill 1545 which requires that students who have enrolled more than two times in the same college credit course must pay tuition fees at 100% of the full cost of instruction. The full cost of instruction is the same as the non-resident tuition fee. All Florida community colleges and state universities are required to begin “counting” attempts beginning in the Fall term 1997. An “attempt” is any course which remains on the student’s class schedule past the published drop/add date for any academic term. When a student withdraws from a course, the withdrawal counts as an attempt. A student is allowed to repeat a course a maximum of three (3) times. On the third attempt, a student cannot withdraw; he must receive a grade. No additional attempts will be allowed without prior approval from the Admissions Committee; approvals may be granted for extenuating circumstances only.
I have read and fully understand the attendance, tardiness and withdrawal policies of ChipolaCollege.

THEATRE LAB SAFETY AGREEMENT
At all times when I am working in the Chipola Tech Shop and theatre space, I will use good laboratory safety practice. While in the laboratory I will always think about the following safety precautions:
- Wear goggles when drilling, carving or sawing
- Know the exact location and operation of first aid equipment
- Do only the task assigned by the tech director or instructor
- Wear clothing that will provide the maximum possible protection
- Never eat, drink, smoke, or chew in the tech area
- Dispose of waste materials according to the directions of the technical
instructor
- Keep the tech room and theatre clean at all times
- Use good judgment and care when working in the tech area
- Read labels on bottles and containers to make certain that if they contain harmful chemicals you use them appropriately or not at all. Always replace the lid or top of any bottle or jar containing chemicals
- Understand how all scene shop tools work and how to use them properly and safely
- Wash hands thoroughly before leaving tech room and theatre
- Immediately report all physical and chemical injuries to instructor, no matter how minor the injury seems to be
I have carefully read these tech safety practices and the safety precautions listed above. I understand their importance in preserving the safety of all persons in the tech room and theatre space.
I recognize my responsibility to observe these practices and precautions while working in the tech room and theatre space.
