Names taken from the Waltham Hall Survey of 1621.
This list has been compiled by John and Nia Watkiss with the permission of the Lincolnshire Record Office. Marilyn Sayers has kindly helped to check the list against the translation by Dr. Peter Franklin, & has helped to eliminate typing errors. It is hoped that the Waltham Hall Survey will be available in translation, with notes, by the end of 2009.
The dates given are mostly taken from the regnal years. These are given in the translation as e.g. 1423/4, except for certain dates of death, which can be specific. We have taken the first date in every instance.
The Survey is primarily concerned with the ownership & transfer of land. It traces the ownership for some fields back to the early & mid 14th Century. Family relationships are given only where they are relevant. Where the dates show a very unlikely life span, they will refer to several people with the same name. They are often, but not always, father and son, or grandfather and grandson.
Names are listed alphabetically by surname, & then by Christian name. The same name may be listed several times because the text can make it difficult to distinguish between people with the same Christian name. The spelling of both Christian & surnames can be very variable. Where possible we have given the surname variations, but have made a single translation of Christian names using Dr Franklin’s notes. In this way Johannes becomes John, Lucas becomes Luke. The women’s names can be even more difficult so for example Katerine is given as Katherine, Roesia as Rose, and Aldree as Audrey without explanation.
Numerals are always given in the modern form so viij d becomes 8d.
Notes in brackets [ ] are made by the compilers. Notes [P.F. ] are taken from Dr. Peter Franklin’s notes to the translation of the Waltham Hall Survey. These notes by Dr Franklin will be greatly extended in the translation of The Survey.
The letter “H” or “O” at the end of a name in the separate list made by us indicates that they were described as Heirs or Offspring. The families who had “offspring” or “sequele” were descended from manorial serfs. “Heres” or “heirs” indicate that they were free, & not bound to the manor. Where some families were both, the “offspring” were usually from the very early records. John Maddison, the Surveyor of the Waltham Hall Survey of 1621, is following the old records in distinguishing between the free & unfree peasant. It is interesting that the majority of the Waltham Hall peasants & tenants were described as of free descent. Not all the tenants are given in this list as it is not possible to distinguish the status of everyone.
Some names can be cross referenced with those from the New College records [now on the Takeley Local History Society web site.].
The expression “lying sick” is translated by Dr. Franklin from “languens etc”, & he says in his notes that the full expression is almost certainly “ languens in extremis”, i.e. the person was on the point of death. Where we have included “lying sick” it implies that this is approximately the date of the persons’ death, although one or two people do manage to be lying sick more than once, so presumably they recovered the first time.
