Summer Reading Assignment

Mr. Langer-Williamson

Student Name: ______

Literary Selections and Materials Needed

1.  The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield

2.  Dracula by Bram Stoker

Note: Both of these novels will be required reading. We will be tying The Thirteenth Tale in with our lessons at the beginning of the term when we study short stories.

You will be required to purchase both novels for class. You may wish to mine your resources and purchase them online.

Dracula is available for free online through Project Gutenberg in various formats.

The Thirteenth Tale will not be available for free online. You should check Amazon or even Barnes and Noble's website.

Please make sure that you select the complete, unabridged version of the texts above. When selecting your copy of Dracula, please do not use a condensed or children's version.

There will be a quiz during the first week of school during homeroom. You must take the quiz regardless of the semester that you have English.

Please obtain a folder. Make sure that your name is clearly labeled on the folder. All of your work for this assignment must be included in the folder upon submission of the first day of school.

Assignments

Please note that all of these assignments are required to be completed. The assignments are due, for both semesters, on the first day of school. There are no exceptions. No late work will be submitted. No extensions will be granted, either.

1.  You are required to keep a double reading journal for each chapter in each novel. Please follow the attached handout for directions. These are to be typed when you hand them in.

2.  Complete the attached character list for each novel. These do not have to be typed.

3.  Complete the attached plot diagram for each novel. Fill in each part on the spaces provided.

4.  Type an essay in response to the prompt below. This essay will be due on the first day of school regardless of the semester that you have English.

Writing Prompt

For the writing prompt, do not just give me a plot summary. I am looking for a good analysis that answers the prompt below.

Many times authors disguise the meaning of a text through a series of symbols that the reader must decode to determine the story's theme. Analyze the text of Dracula carefully and show how the symbols of the story lead to a deeper understanding of the meaning of the work as a whole.

As you write your paper, please remember to:

1.  Create a focused thesis statement that presents your insight to the prompt

2.  Clearly present examples from the text to support your thesis

3.  Show evidence that you read carefully with a solid analysis of the text

4.  Present your ideas in a logical and organized fashion

5.  Show evidence of your adherence to the steps of the writing process

6.  Type your final copy. Hand-written copies will not be accepted.

7.  Hand your paper, personally, to your teacher.

8.  Turn your paper in on the first day of school. No late papers will be accepted.

9.  Turn in your reading journal. Please put each chapter in order and staple them together.

10.  Turn in your character sheet
