Furniture making introduction. Students participate in a group furniture construction project in preparation for individual designing/building of furniture pieces. A historical overview prepares students to apply design sensibility and functional considerations to individual projects. A lab fee is required.

Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:

Students will work in teams to:

  • Read standard furniture print
  • Produce cut sheet from prints
  • Select materials according to aesthetic and functional considerations
  • Develop production sequence
  • Select hardware as applicable
  • Select and apply finish
  • Overview of historical furniture styles: late 1800’s to present

Students will work individually to:

  • Present design concepts and preliminary drawings utilizing principles of design and ergonomic considerations
  • Complete construction drawings
  • Produce cut sheets from prints
  • Develop production sequence
  • Select hardware as applicable
  • Construct individual furniture product according to prints
  • Select and apply finish
  • Assess finished pieces for functionality, aesthetics, and level of craft
