CLASS TITLE: COMMISSARY CLERK

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of a Sheriff’s Sergeant, perform duties related to the maintenance and operation of the jail commissary facilities.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Conduct physical inventory of stock in store; maintain stock items; type stock requisitions to order needed items.

Check, process and prepare commissary slips and check for adequate funds of inmates for purchases deducting monies from inmate accounts; process inmate commissary requests on a regular basis; distribute commissary items to inmates.

Assure departmental rules, regulations and procedures are followed regarding issuing commissary items to inmates.

File commissary and stock requisitions.

Complete monthly inventory and post to master monthly list.

Provide work direction and guidance to inmate trustees who work in the commissary.

Pick up needed supplies from vendors.

Check prices of commissary items and mark items; review sales trends; project future needs.

Maintain commissary store in an orderly manner.

Perform related duties as assigned

Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies.

ABILITY TO:

Operate a cash register, adding machine, typewriter and other office equipment.

Learn departmental regulations concerning the operation of the commissary store.

Take physical inventory of stock in the store.

Understand and follow oral and written directions.

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

Assign and review the work of others.

Read, interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

Plan and organize work.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination equivalent to: sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid California driver’s license.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Commissary environment.

Physical abilities required include bending at the waist, moderate lifting (15-44 pounds), pushing equipment, hearing and speaking to communicate with prisoners, trustees and vendors, and standing for extended periods of time.

Incumbents may be exposed to contact with dissatisfied or abusive individuals.
