Job Title: Director of Finance and Resources

Salary: £40,909 - £42,778

Terms: 28 days annual leave, 8 Bank holidays and 6% non-contributory pension

Location:Manchester, with some travel to other AKT sites

Accountable to: Chief Executive

Accountable for: Finance and Administration teams

Role Summary

The primary purpose of the role is to lead the operational financial management of the organisation with the secondary purpose of providing oversight and management of AKT’s support function, comprising: administration, information technology, human resources and performance management.

  • Ensuring the day-to-day financial management of the organisation, helping to secure the long-term financial viability of the Albert Kennedy Trust (AKT) and lead on the development of the finance strategy and its implementation.
  • Oversight of AKT’s HR function ensuring AKT complies with all statutory human resource responsibilities.
  • Providing financial input to bidding and tendering and supporting commercial activity.
  • Ensuring effective and efficient performance management reporting systems are in place.
  • Managing the investment in and renewal of all IT systems ensuring they are fit for purpose.
  • Providing line management support to the Fundraising and Communications Manager.
  • Oversight of the administrative function
  • Deputising for the Chief Executive in internal and external matters when requested.

Key Tasks

  1. Finance
  2. Further develop and implement financial management, planning and control systems, to meet AKT’S evolving needs.
  3. Oversee the day-to-day financial systems including, cash flow monitoring, bank reconciliations, invoicing, banking, petty cash, payroll and pensions.
  4. Prepare and produce regular management accounts, forecasts, statutory accounts and reports for the Chief Executive, internal management meetings, Finance Sub-Committee and Board meetings.
  5. Prepare in conjunction with Chief Executive the annual budget and work with other Managers to maintain budgetary controls throughout the year.
  6. As a member of the Senior Management Team contribute to developing a stable and robust funding and income base for AKT including increasing reserves and maximising investment opportunities.
  7. Oversee the management of all maintenance contracts, and ensure AKT regularly backs-up work and complies with all necessary security precautions. Including all supplier contracts, insurance policies, leases, contracts and legal agreements entered into by AKT.
  1. Oversight of Support functions
  2. Oversee the AKT’s organisational and administrative systems and team, ensuring they remain relevant, effective and efficient. To have oversight of the organisations Fundraising and Communications function through supervising the teams Manager.
  3. In partnership with AKT’S Human Resources Working Group ensure AKT complies with all statutory human resource responsibilities and oversee policy developments and procedures in this area.
  4. Oversee the effective implementation and on-going development of AKT’s Performance Management system by the senior staff team, including the review of agreed success indicators and outcome measures.
  5. Oversee and review the AKT’s risk management policy and procedures.
  6. Take the strategic lead on overseeing the smooth day-to-day running of the organisation and ensure AKT has sufficient policies and procedures in place to ensure the safety and security of all staff, volunteers and visitors.
  1. Senior Management Team Responsibilities
  2. Working with Trustees and Chief Executive to ensure AKT meets all of its statutory legal obligations and responsibilities.
    Provide support to the Chief Executive and the Board of Trustees by administering and undertaking governance support functions.
  3. As a member of the Senior Management team contribute to strategic planning and business development, including supporting the Chief Executive in facilitating the process of establishing the Annual Plan, Business Plan and Strategic Plan.
  4. Liaise and brief Trustees as appropriate, including attending all Board meetings, servicing the Finance Sub-Committee.
  5. Act as Deputy to the Chief Executive both internally and externally as requested.
  6. Undertake any other tasks that may be requested, commensurate with the nature and level of the post and as may be required by your line manager.
  7. Comply with AKT’s policies, procedures, management and monitoring systems.

Performance Management

This role will be performance managed through a series of key performance targets and other contractual and organisation measures

All staff are expected to maintain a flexible approach to their roles to respond to the AKT’s changing needs. The responsibilities of the post may be changed, subject to review, over a period of time. This will be done in consultation with the post holder.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Either three years senior level experience in financial management and control, or a professional accountancy qualification (ACMA, ACA, ACCA)
  • Experienced Senior Manager with a proven track record of success, excellent time management skills and the ability to meet tight deadlines and work under pressure.
  • Natural leader, capable of innovative thinking and the ability to inspire others.
  • Able to draw upon extensive experience gained from 5 years practical management experience.
  • Understanding of and commitment to achieving equality and valuing diversity, particularly with lesbian, gay and bisexual communities.
  • Ability to negotiate, influence and persuade others in complex situations to achieve required outcomes.
  • Confident decision maker, with high levels of integrity, enthusiasm and determination.
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written – including the ability to interpret complex information and advice clearly and concisely to a range of audiences.
  • Excellent IT skills and proven experience of using a range of software packages.
  • Familiarity with charitable administration requirements and an understanding of the third sector.

Desirable

  • Experience of developing human resource policies and a commitment to agency wide personal and professional development.
  • Experience of bidding for grants and tendering for commercial contracts and of costing services and delivery arrangements
  • Experience of developing successful trading and commercial activities including developing social enterprises.
  • Experience of obtaining professionally respected charter marks, (Investors in People, Positive about Disabled People).
  • Understanding of and commitment to the voluntary sector and an appreciation of the values underpinning the design and delivery of the AKT’s work.
