Silicon Valley Habitat for Humanity is building 5 four-bedroom homes on Murphy Avenue in San Jose beginning July 2005. The partner families have been chosen.

The five houses are the first to be built on Murphy Avenue. A third Murphy Avenue site, six houses, is scheduled for 2006. With a total of eleven houses, the Murphy Avenue project is the largest group of houses attempted by Silicon Valley Habitat for Humanity. Construction began in August, 2005, and will continue in the months to come. The houses will be under roof by the time the winter rains begin.

Volunteer Construction Instructions

This development requires the help of many volunteers. Unskilled volunteers are teamed with more skilled workers. Construction volunteers must be at least 14 years old. (Special instructions apply to volunteers who are under 18, see below)

We will begin each construction day with a safety orientation and ask that you read the attached safety requirements before you arrive. While we do want to get the job done, we want to do it in the safest, not necessarily the most expedient manner. Your personal safety and that of those working around you is very important.

Important Information:

1. Work Days are Wednesday through Saturday from 8:00 am till 4:00 pm and Sunday from 9:00 am till 4:00 pm. It is important to be on time, before the safety orientation meeting begins. You must sign-in on the daily work ledger and sign a waiver of liability.

2. A mandatory safety meeting is held each day at 8:15 am except for Sundays at 9:15 am. Please be prompt.

3. Appropriate dress is important. Example: Long sleeves, long pants, hat and hard-soled shoes. Avoid dangling jewelry and loose clothing.

4. Please bring your own work gloves if desired, lunch and beverages (no alcohol, please!) We will have water and coffee on site. Also bring sunscreen or rain gear, if appropriate.

5. Hard hats and tools will be provided by Habitat

6. A sack lunch is advisable to bring for the half hour break at noon.

Reservations are required and can be made by calling the Habitat office at (408) 942-6444.

Youth Guidelines are as follows:

¨  No one under the age of 14

¨  Must be 18 or over to use power tools

¨  There must be an adult accompanying every five youth under 18 years of age

¨  Waivers must be pre-signed by parent/legal guardian and brought to the site.

We look forward to working with you!
