Differentiated Instruction Application Assignment
Grade: 1st Grade
Subject: Science
Lesson: What Do Animals Need to Survive?
Objectives:
- By the end of the class period, when asked, students will be able to recite the four things all animals need to survive: food, water, air and shelter.
- By the end of the class period, when asked, each student will be able to tell two different ways for animals to get air: lungs or gills.
- By the end of the class period, when asked, each student will be able to give an example of an animal’s food, water, how they get air and shelter.
Demonstrate knowledge of flexible teaching by articulating 3-4 different instructional strategies that could be used to teach one concept of objective.
The following could be broken into different groups or voted on by the class.
Based on Learning-profile:
Option 1: Learning by teacher instruction
Teacher teaches from the book exploring the four main points of this lesson.
- Food: All animals have to eat, just like people. Different animals eat different things. See if they know any. Ex: Pandas eat bamboo; bird: berries, seeds, insects, worms; Fish: plankton (Basically really small: there are also four types of plankton such as bacteria, plants, archaea and animal); Badgers: worms, insects, roots
- Water: Talk about different kinds of water that different animals might drink from.
- Air: How do different animals breathe: lungs (take oxygen from the air) or gills (take oxygen from the water)
- Shelter: A place to keep the animal safe. Can they think of examples? Ex: Foxes: holes; Bird: nests; Fish: plants in the water
Assessment: Teacher asks students questions to assess understanding.
Option 2: Independent Reading and Note Taking
Students will take their text book and be given a worksheet (attached). Students
will be given a variety of different books and National Geographic’s to choose from in order to help them fill out their worksheet.
Books: Text Book
Owls by Fern G. Brown
Lizards by Nic Bishop
Owls and Other Birds of Prey by Mary E. Reid
Octopus by Evelyn Shaw
Macmillan Animals Encyclopedia for Children by Roger Few
African Animals by Caroline Arnold
Sharks, Whales and Dolphins edited by Marion Dent and Scott Steedman
The Emperor Penguins by Kazue Mizumura
Howlers and Other New World Monkeys by Mary E. Reid
Fur Seals and Other Pinnipeds by Lome Piasetsky
Polar Bears by Mark Newman
Assessment: Turn in worksheet.
Option 3: Watch Video Clips and Notes
Students will take the worksheet (attached), and go to a station where they will watch three different video clips (Finding Nemo with the anemone; Fox and the Hound with the badger or the owl; and Lion King with the lions in the den or gopher). Students will then use the videos to fill out the worksheet.
Assessment: Turn in worksheet.
Option 4: Application through Art
Students will get into a group read through the lesson of the text book. They will
then draw and label three pictures of three different animals and their necessities
for survival. (At least one of the animals must be a fish) Give them option 4
worksheet for them to draw on.
Before moving on to the next subject, do a quick class discussion recap about the four things all animals need to survive: Food, Water, Air, Shelter
