Functional Text Projects

DUE NOVEMBER 7

The purpose of functional text is to give you specific information or to help you perform a day-to-day task.

One type of non-fiction is informational text. Three subgenres of informational text are exposition, argument and functional text. Some examples of functional text are brochures, text messages, e-mails, game direction labels, signs, maps, food nutrition labels, menus, recipes, a roster of players, schedules, etc…

Chooseone of the following projects:

Assembly Instructions:

You can create anything from crafts to Legos. It’s up to you! You must include a picture of the product you are creating, instructions to build it, and all supplies needed to build/create it! Do not copy straight from an instruction manual, but you can use them as examples. Your project should be on a half piece of posterboard with the title of your product, the picture, instructions and allneeded supplies included. Be neat!

Brochure:

You may create a brochure of any city, state, country, or place of entertainment. It must be neat and colorful. You should include reasons to visit this, attractions, a map, etc… All sides of the trifold should be written on. You may draw pictures or use clip art, but you must include pictures. Word has a template for brochures if you would like to use that as a guide.

Schedule:

You must choose one week in November to describe your weekly activities. For example, if you choose November 2-8 (Sun-Sat), you must list times you go to school, clubs, after school sports, study time, tv time, etc. Do not tell your school schedule! You will create a calendar on a half piece of posterboard for that week and include illustrations. These can be printed from the computer or drawn.

Application:

You are allowed to Google different examples of job application as references, but you must create your own job application. You must create a fake business with a company logo, and then create the application along with great questions you would want your prospective employees to answer.

For example: Apple’s logo is the big silver apple. These are some questions Apple might ask on an application.

Have you ever worked with computers before? Would you be willing to travel for work? Do you know how to program a computer?

Recipe:

You must bring in a hand written or self-typed recipe. The recipe must include ingredients and a complete description of how the food/drink was made. You will also bring the actual food(enough for 25 people). Even if it is a very small piece to share/taste….You might want to consider napkins/plates/utensils too if necessary. If your food/drink item needs refrigeration, please drop it off in Mrs. Watkins’ room at 7 am when you arrive at school. You can use cookbooks and recipe websites as examples.

****Please be mindful or peanut allergies….some classes have some people in them that can’t eat them.
