About the position:

The position coordinates the Public Diplomacy activities within the High Commission and, in conjunction with the Research and Visits Officer, will undertake research and report writing tasks that contribute to the High Commission’s formal reporting duties.

The successful applicant will lead a lively and contemporary Public Diplomacy program,curate the High Commission’sinternet and social media presence, and supportmedia monitoring, research and reportingfor the High Commission in Canada. The role will take direction from diplomatic staff but will require a level of leadership, initiative,and autonomy in public diplomacy, social media, and reporting activities.

Duty Statement:

Under limited direction and in accordance with Workplace Diversity, Occupational Health and Safety and Industrial Democracy principles and practices:

  1. Public Diplomacy (60%):

–Devising and managing an active program of events, promoting Australia’s profile, culture and policies with an innovative focus on social media.

–Responding to public inquiries.

–Managing the High Commission’s online presence (Twitter and Website) and developing new ways of engaging audiences of interest to promote accurate and positive views of Australia.

–Maintaining a working knowledge of a range of key Canadian politicians, academics, industry and public servants in order to inform both research and High Commission public diplomacy events.

–Building a network of contacts in the Canadian Government and media that support the High Commission’s public diplomacy objectives.

–Developing and managing the public affairs budget, resources and promotional materials.

–Media monitoring (French and English) in areas of interest to DFAT staff, for use in briefs, speeches by the High Commissioner and reporting.

  1. Research (25%)

–Analysing and reporting (including through official reporting channels) on news and policy developments of interest to Australia. (eg. Changes in Canadian and provincial government policies, personnel and machinery of government; economics, trade, environment and climate change, energy and indigenous policy.)

–Media monitoring in areas of interest to Australia for use in social media content, briefing, speeches and reporting.

–Following progress of major pieces of legislation through parliament.

–Assisting in the management of the High Commission information resources, contact directories, databases, internet sources.

  1. Assist with arrangements for visits to Canada by Australian Government Ministers and officials, academics, journalists and others (10%)
  1. Other incidental tasks as directed by A-based staff.(5%)

Selection Criteria:

Essential

  • Appropriate tertiary qualifications and experience in media, public relations, public affairs or a related work environment.
  • Highly developed event and social media management skills.
  • Demonstrated written communication skills and proficiency in report writing.
  • Well-developed oral and interpersonal skills, and the ability to liaise effectively with government, interest groups, relevant industry personnel and media contacts.
  • Proven ability to undertake complex research and analytical tasks.
  • High-level knowledge of Canadian government policy development and processes, society and commerce.
  • Demonstrated organisational and time management skills, and an ability to handle multiple tasks, manage priorities and meet agreed schedules.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office-based software and technology systems.
  • Have the right to work in Canada
  • An ability to build and maintain a strong working relationship with relevant stakeholders
