DEVELOPMENT AND SUSTANABILITY
ASSIGNMENT GUIDELINES
1. Students are required to write one (1) essay of not less than 3000 words, typed written and double spaced with font size 12. Essay can either be in Bahasa Malaysia OR English.
2. The essay is your assignment which represents 30% of your total marks.
3. There will be no presentation for this assignment.
4. Essays must follow the standard format academic writing with references, footnotes, tables and figures, diagrams and photos as required.

1 Define Sustainability. Compare and contrasts the many dimensions of sustainability. How does the government respond and strategize towards achieving sustainability?
2 What do you understand by sustainable communities, its principles and characteristics? Compare and contrast between the conventional and an electronic or virtual community. Are these communities sustainable?
3 What do you understand by Sustainable Consumption? What is the world’s response to the unsustainable consumption practices and the role of each government in response to this?
4 Rapid and accelerating technological progress of ICTs, have both positive and negative impacts on society and the environment. Discuss at length the impacts of ICT on our society and the environment.
5 Local Agenda 21 (LA21) conceptualized in chapter 28 of Agenda 21 was adopted by 178 governments at the 1992 Rio Conference. It is a voluntary process of local community consultation with the aim to create local policies and programs that work towards achieving sustainable development. It encompasses awareness raising, capacity building, community participation and the formation of partnerships. Discuss in detail the main features of Agenda 21 and the extent to which your government committed itself in translating this Agenda into practice.
6 What do you understand by Sustainable City and what are their main issues? Choosing either a Healthy City or Safe City, elaborate on its definition, characteristics and what the future lies for these new cities.
7 Compare and contrast on the strengths and weaknesses of the traditional and new approach to governance. Discuss the nature of governance in your country.
