c) Explain how a designer can use research and inspiration when designing

To influence choice of colours, choice of mood/atmosphere, choice of shape, choice of fabricetc.

More marks will be gained for specific examples e.g. use of bright reds and black as these are

colours associated with rock and roll music 3

Note : this question does not ask where a designer gets inspiration from

d) Describe two ways designers could use ICT to present their ideas to a client

Powerpoint presentation, word processed report with graphs etc., digital photos, 3D modelling, CAD drawings showing colourways 2

Note : not just CAD drawings

2 a) Give two advantages of modifying an existing product when designing your own idea

If a product is already successful you do not have to do the research and development work as you know it sells

Looking at existing products gives you ideas to start you off

This speeds up the designing process and reduces the costs. 2

b) Describe two drawbacks of copying an existing design

You might break the copyright law and be sued

You might saturate the market with an idea and yours won’t sell 2

c) You have been asked to show design ideas for your product.

The design specification says your product must :

·  Be based on the theme of music

·  Use appliqué as a decorative technique

·  Be suitable for industrial production so that it can be made in quantity

In the spaces on the next page draw and label two different design ideas for your product.

·  Products should be different in shape and design or be 2 totally different products

·  Name the products

·  Drawings should fill the box and be easy to understand

·  Annotate basic detail & do limited colouring in

Marks will be given for : quality of two different design ideas (2x3) 6

1-2 marks weak sketches with little detail shown

3-4 marks clear sketch with some detail

5-6 marks clear sketch with good detail and 2 clearly different products

Marks will be given for : quality of notes and sketches (2x2) 4

Theme used as part of design – explanation if inspiration is not clear

·  Originality & quality of the design 4

Use of theme in an unusual way, type of idea

·  Presentation of the final idea 3

Good use of space, clear diagrams, unusual ideas, all information that could be given is included

·  Read where the marks are to be awarded

·  Use all space provided

·  Include back, front, side, birds eye views etc. as necessary

·  Include exploded views to show detail

·  Don’t spend too long colouring in – scamp lines (band of colour) will do

·  Annotate detail to explain your ideas

1-6 marks lacks detail, unimaginative, poor use of space, poor relation to theme

7-12 marks unimaginative, not thought about end use, relates to theme but is weak

13-18 marks sound design relating to theme, some detail, some imagination used

19-24 marks clear, detailed, relates to spec & theme, imaginative

g) Explain why the design idea you have chosen will appeal to your target market

e.g. Fashionable (give example), why the style appeals, why the colour appeals etc. 2

3 a) Write a fabric specification for the fabric you will use for your product

i) fibre content

this will depend on the chosen fabric

ii) method of construction

this will depend on the chosen fabric

colour, texture, surface appearance, feel, weight, properties e.g. washability, crease

resistance 6

b) Name two components you will need for your product

e.g. zip, interfacing, buttons, ribbon, lace, piping cord 2

c) Name one fabric finish that would improve the qualities of your chosen fabric

Should relate to chosen fabric and item

e.g. stain resistance, crease resistance (Teflon), flame resistance (Proban)

1 mark basic name

2 marks including commercial name and/or additional details 2

d) Explain why this finish might be necessary

Adds value for the consumer and makes product more usable, reduces negative aspects of fabric, makes product last longer 2

4 a) Use notes and diagrams to explain how to do the appliqué decoration

·  Try to do as many diagrams as possible

·  Label diagrams to explain details

·  Look at the number of marks and try to do around that many stages in your description

Possible nformation to include :

e.g. Use of interfacing

How to hold down shape ready for machining e.g. bondaweb, tacking, lockstitch

Impact means have an effect on

Answers must relate to chosen product

e.g.

·  Cotton is damaging to the environment e.g. land is over farmed, dangerous pesticides are used on the plants, lots of water used in production of fabrics.

·  Dyeing uses lots of water, waste water can also have chemicals or colours in it which damages our rivers. Coloured water also blocks out light and kills fish etc.

·  Traditional stonewashing on denim uses lots of water and the dirty water that is produced kills

fish as it lets no light through.

·  Lots of manmade fibres are made from non renewable raw materials.

·  Tencel is made from renewable resources and chemicals used in the production process are

recyclable so this is a good fibre

·  Polyester is from a non renewable resource but it can be recycled.

·  Fabric product is made out of could be recycled 2

6 Look at the separate piece of paper with a photograph of a Textiles product.
