Technology Assessment

●Describe your objective or vision for your project.

●Is the technology solution in support of a class, administrative function, outreach, or research?

●What department or college is associated with the technology need?

●Is the class or event one-time or recurring? How often?

● Will you be using your own device?

●If yes, what type of device will you be using? Mac, Windows, Android, iOS?

●Do you present from this device or use a USB stick?

●What type of devices may the participants be using? Mac, Windows, Android, iOS?

● Will you be presenting from a classroom on campus or remotely? Both?

●Will this be a classroom to classroom collaboration or will students and/or faculty be joining individually? Or both?

●How many faculty are a part of this collaboration?

●Do you want to bring in remote presenters?

●Is there an online course or online learning component?

●Will students from both classrooms be participating in asynchronous discussions and cross team projects?

● Do you have a classroom identified?

●Can you travel to a technology-equipped classroom?

In Room/Local Experience

●Are you sharing PowerPoint slides or other content?

●Will you be playing back videos or animations?

●Do you need to annotate or markup your slides?

●Do you use a whiteboard or blackboard?

●Do you present wirelessly?

●Do you use break out sessions?

●Do you use a chat feature, Instant Messaging, or twitter?

●Do you use polling?

●Please list any other technology not mentioned

Remote Experience

●Are you connecting to a classroom, and if so how many?

●Will the sessions be co-facilitated by you and a faculty member at the other location?

●Approximately how many students will be in each classroom?

●Are students connecting to the classroom? How many students? Will the students need to connect to each other?

●Will students be presenting, working in small groups, or asking questions

●What geographic locations will the participants be in?

●Do you need audio of the students or just the instructor, or not at all?

●Do you need video of the students, or just the instructor, or not at all?

●Do the remote students need to see content on the blackboard or whiteboard?

Recording & Live

●Do you need to make a recording of the class or event?

●Does the recording include audio, video, PowerPoint or all three?

●Do the PowerPoint slides need to be indexed?

●Do the PowerPoint slides need to be text searchable?

●Do you need to record audio of the students or just the instructor?

●Do you need to record video of the students, or just the instructor?

●Where are the recordings published?

●Who should be able to view the recordings?

●Are these recordings considered educational records and regulated by FERPA?

Quality

Select the minimum acceptable quality levels for video and audio. Increased quality directly affects costs of the technology solution.

Video

●Low – Skype quality. Single camera, fixed on the teaching location. The instructor may move in and out of frame.

●Medium – Better then Skype. Video may occasionally freeze or become pixelated.

●High – Video should never freeze or become pixelated. Image is sharp and in HD.

●Very High – Video is sharp, in HD, camera follows the presenter or student speaking in the room.

Audio

●Low – Skype quality. Generally a single microphone on the teaching location. The instructor may move out of effective range of the microphone. HVAC and other environmental noises may be an issue.

●Medium – Better then Skype. Audio may occasionally become garbled or drop out.

●High – Audio should never drop out or be garbled. HVAC noise may be occasionally heard.

●Very High – All individuals in the room can be heard with the utmost clarity. Individuals can talk over each other and multiple conversations can be followed. Remote participants experience little to no listener fatigue.

Support

●What kind of support do you think you will need?

●Will your college or unit provide the needed technical support?

Technology

●Are your participants restricted to certain technologies (add detail, they may not know what the options are)?

●Is this type of technology or teaching mode new to you?

●Do you have a technology preference (give examples to choose from)?

●Do you have a preference for a portable or integrated technology solution? [show an example]

Budget

●Do you have a budget for this project?

●Is funding from a grant?

●Are there any restrictions on spending the funds?
