Air Force Research Laboratory, AFRL/RXC, Materials and Manufacturing Directorate, Structural Materials is announcing to industry its intent to solicit proposals under this Broad Agency Announcement (BAA). The overall objective is to identify further unique technical approaches to accomplish the invention, advancement, and transition of emerging, novel and innovative Nondestructive Evaluation / Inspection (NDE/I), Material State Awareness (MSA), and in-situ NDE -aka Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) - technologies. This effort will encompass three (3) areas of interest: 1) Research in Materials State Awareness (MSA); 2) Research in Damage State Awareness (DSA) and 3) Research in Specialty Coatings and Applications.

Deadline: April 30, 2015

5)  Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) NSF 15-541

The goal of the CPS program is to develop the core system science needed to engineer complex cyber-physical systems which people can use or interact with and depend upon. Some of these may require high-confidence or provable behaviors. The program aims to foster a research community committed to advancing research and education in CPS and to transitioning CPS science and technology into engineering practice. By abstracting from the particulars of specific systems and application domains, the CPS program seeks to reveal cross-cutting fundamental scientific and engineering principles that underpin the integration of cyber and physical elements across all application sectors.

Deadline: May 04, 2015

6)  Federal Railroad Administration Broad Agency Announcement 2015 FRA-BAA-2015-1

The FRA’s Office of Research, Development and Technology is charged with conducting research and development in support of improved railroad safety and national rail transportation policy. Projects shall develop technologies that have a direct impact on the safety and efficiency of freight and passenger rail operations in the US. Such technologies will: 1) Reduce the operational and program deployment risks associated with mixed use rail lines; 2) Improve safety by reducing human and technology failures; 3) Bring about capital cost reductions and economy in producing equipment and facilities; 4) Reduce operating costs of rail service by providing more efficient operations; 5) Improve the reliability of equipment and infrastructure components by reducing failures and/or reducing false failure detections; 6) Enhance the social benefits and/or environmental aspects of rail transportation; and 7) Facilitate the development of domestic manufacture of rail equipment and infrastructure components.

Deadline: May 04, 2015

7)  U.S.-China Clean Energy Research Center: Energy and Water DE-FOA-0001285

The Department of Energy is soliciting applications for the formation of a Consortium to pursue five identified R&D topics at the nexus of energy and water. These topics are: 1) water use reduction at thermoelectric plants; 2) treatment and management of non-traditional waters; 3) improving sustainable hydropower design and operation; 4) climate impact modeling, methods, and scenarios to support improved energy and water systems understanding; and 5) data and analysis to inform planning, policy, and other decisions. Each responsive proposal will address all five topics.

Deadline: May 04, 2015

8)  EERE Postdoctoral Research Awards

The objective of the EERE Postdoctoral Research Awards is to support scientific research in energy efficiency and renewable energy by attracting the best scientists and engineers to pursue breakthrough technologies in a highly prestigious postdoctoral research program. To meet this objective, EERE Research Participants will have access to unique education and training opportunities, top scientists in their field, and state-of-the-art projects and equipment. As a result, innovative technologies will be developed that will have a real impact on the economy by providing energy efficient and affordable technologies; on the environment by providing clean energy technologies; and on the quality of life for all Americans by enhancing their energy choices.

9)  Micro-scale Optimized Solar-cell Arrays with Integrated Concentration (MOSAIC) DE-FOA-0001255

The MOSAIC (Micro-scale Optimized Solar-cell Arrays with Integrated Concentration) Program will fund potentially disruptive technologies and related system concepts to achieve new performance and cost benchmarks for solar-electric generation from photovoltaics (PV). Specifically, MOSAIC will develop novel concepts that integrate arrays of high-performance micro-scale concentrated PV (micro-CPV) elements into modules that are similar in profile and cost to traditional non-concentrated “flat-plate” (FP) PV, but achieve the performance level associated with conventional Concentrated Photovoltaics (CPV). Realization of the aggressive targets of MOSAIC will require the formation of R&D teams from several communities, including material scientists, electrical and packaging engineers, optical engineers, micro-scale manufacturing specialists, and researchers in polymers and opto-electronics.

Deadline: May 07, 2015

10)  Mobilizing Research: A Research Resource to Enhance mHealth Research (U2C) RFA-OD-15-129

The purpose of this FOA is to support the development of Mobilizing Research a research resource that would allow researchers to more efficiently and rapidly evaluate mobile and wireless (mHealth) technologies. This research resource is intended to develop an infrastructure that works with wireless carriers to create a registry of potential participants to facilitate mHealth research across a variety of observational and clinical research studies and settings, and for a range of diseases and populations. This FOA supports Mobilizing Research for development of the infrastructure and transition to sustainability. Therefore, the proposed integrated and centralized resource should be designed and operated in a way that will facilitate and enable its sustainable functioning in the near future.
