Duties of theGeographic Information Science Programs Coordinator

Geographic Information Science Programs include: the BS in Applied Geography/Geographic Information Management; the Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Systems; and the MS in Applied Geographic Information Science (proposal)

The GIS Programs Coordinator will complete and submit by April 1stthe Annual Assessment Report for the following Degrees:

- BS in Applied Geography/Geographic Information Science

- MS in Applied GIS (once approved)

Note: the GIS Certificate Program does not require an Annual Assessment Report, but requires period assessment and other reviews, including and annual review for Proposition 301 funding purposes. All such reviews are the responsibility of the GIS Program Coordinator.

The GIS Programs Coordinator will work with the Chair and the Department’s Administrative Assistant in:

  1. Oversee admissions to the Graduate GIS Certificate Program and the MS in GIS, once it has been approved.
  2. Coordinating GIS related advising, including the assignment of advisees
  3. Coordinating GGR/PL class schedulesto ensure that all of the required GIS courses are offered in appropriate sequence to ensure availability to students and adequate enrollments.
  4. Developing the MS in GIS degree proposal and curriculum
  5. Attending to GIS Alumni matters
  6. Hiring GIS part-time faculty, graduate teaching assistants, and student workers
  7. Overseeing GIS curriculum and other program needs
  8. Developing and implementing a strategic plan for the Department’s GIS programs
  9. Preparing the Department budget as it relates to GIS program needs
  10. Representing the Department to off-campus GIS groups

The GIS Programs Coordinator will be available to stand in as the Acting Chair when requested to do so during scheduled absences of the Chair. Primary duties include being available for signatures, routine paperwork and decisions, and miscellaneous questions as they arise. During times when the Chair is out of town, the Program Coordinator would be ‘on call’ either at home or in the office to help with routine matters that may arise. The Chair will provide ample lead time for the above. This duty shall be shared with the Rural Geography Graduate Coordinator and the PRM Program Coordinator.

The GIS Programs Coordinator will receive a three credit hour course load reduction per year (one for each of the following terms that the position is held: Fall, Spring and Summer).
