Course Description

The class of E.S.L. includes the study of literary elements through the reading of a variety of genres with common themes, including novels, short stories, poetry and non-fiction. Special emphasis is placed on the study of vocabulary from the works read. Grammar will be studied with application to the writing process. Students will write in numerous modes with special attention given to literary narratives and expository essays in preparation for the state STAAR / EOC exam. All required Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and Texas College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS) will be covered in depth.

Course Objectives

In accordance with the TEKS and CCRS, students enrolled in E.S.L. continue to increase and refine their communication skills and are expected to plan, draft, and complete written compositions on a regular basis, in addition to writing in a timed situation. An emphasis is placed on logical arguments with clear supporting evidence. Students read in multiple genres and learn literary forms and terms associated with selections being read. Students learn to interpret the influences of the historical context of a literary work.

Grading System

Nine weeks grades will be calculated as follows:

20% Daily

Any in class assignments, pop quizzes, short homework assignments, and participation

35% Quizzes

Quizzes and/or Higher Level Critical Thinking Assignments, Response Journals, CBAs

45% Major Assignments

Tests, Projects, Presentations, Process/Timed Compositions

Make Up Work

Absent students must ask for their makeup work upon their return. All make-up work is due no later than five days after their return. It is the student’s responsibility to schedule a time to make up any missed tests or quizzes.

Tutorials

Tutorials are available Monday-Thursday morning before school from 8:00-8:30 and after school by appointment.

Students are encouraged to seek extra help when needed. Parents and guardians are welcome to call, email, or schedule conferences when concerns arise. Together we can make it a great year!

Class Policies

All school rules and policies will be enforced. Late work will have points deducted for every day it is late. After three days, the assignment will be given a grade of zero and the student will not be allowed to make it up.

2.  Come to class with necessary supplies (paper, pencil)

3.  Behave in courteous manner that represents respect for self and others

4.  Use time wisely to complete assignments

·  Bring your iPad to class everyday

·  Make sure your iPad is charged

·  It is suggested that you have a stylus.
