Dear Parents and Caregivers,26-Oct-18

This note is to give you some early information about Sports Day this year, which will be held in Week 8 of Term 1. The Sports Day committee is well and truly underway with early preparations and we are very excited to share some information on a new format for the Junior Primary students in 2017. This new format we believe will give our junior primary students the opportunity to display their true athletic abilities and have a great time along the way.

Over the years, our school has grown in numbers quite significantly. This has resulted in a lack of adequate space for the Junior Primary students to compete safely with the Primary students in a true athletics sports day that includes traditional events such as sprints, long distance, long jump and hurdles. This year we would like to give the younger children this opportunity and have decided to hold a Junior Primary “Athletics Day” on the morning of Thursday 23rd March followed by fun tabloid events as part of the whole school Sports Day on Friday 24th March.

At this stage we plan to run about 7 traditional athletic events on Thursday morning where the younger children can wear t-shirts in their house colours and participate strongly, knowing there will be a modified scoring system. The house points they earn on Thursday will be include in the final tally on Friday when the Whole School Sports Day is run. By no means will the children miss out on Friday either. On Friday the Junior Primary will be involved in the March on, War Cries and Health Hustle exactly as they have in the past and in addition, they will have 4 fun tabloid events.

The advantage of this format is that the children will have the space on the oval, which will be marked out ready for Friday sports day, where they can safely and correctly participate in true athletic events. The children will also get to experience the feeling of working with their team mates to win points for their house and have an opportunity to be part of two sports events. On Friday, they have a few less tabloid events than what they had traditionally and this will give them the chance to watch more of the older children in their athletic events, cheer them on and become excited and enthusiastic about what opportunities are waiting for them in the higher years. Usually children have also been quite tired by the Friday afternoon when the whole school relays, tug of war and other whole school events were run. This format enables teachers to have the flexibility to give the children a rest out of the sun or bring them out to cheer their house team on,as often as they feel appropriate. As Friday will still be the main day, the children are encouraged to dress up specially to demonstrate their sports colours(e.g. zinc, haircolour etc.) so coloured T shirts and shorts are the only requirement on Thursday. The finer details of both days are still to be worked out and specific information will follow, but we are looking forward to both days being a sports highlight for the children this year.

Parents of Junior Primary students(R-2) might be wondering which of the two days they should attend. Parents are welcome both days. Thursday will be the athletic events until lunchtime and Friday they will join in with whole school events in a more carnival atmosphere with barbecue lunch available.

Kind Regards,
